Student Health Insurance Plan 2024-2025

As you prepare for the 2024-2025 academic year, we urge you to consider your health insurance coverage a top priority. Students must have access to comprehensive medical care in Rhode Island while enrolled at Roger Williams University (RWU).

RWU has partnered with University Health Plans (UHP) to offer a comprehensive Student Health Insurance Plan. The annual premium for coverage is $3,116 effective August 14, 2024, to August 13, 2025.

Detailed information about the University's Student Health Insurance Plan and premium.

International Student Enrollment and Waiver Process

International students are automatically enrolled in the Student Health Insurance Plan and do not need to take any action to enroll.

International students with comparable U.S.-based health insurance policies filed and approved in the U.S. and compliant with the Affordable Care Act (ACA) may submit a waiver form by August 19, 2024 for Fall semester, January 31, 2025 for Spring semester. The waiver form will be reviewed before being approved or denied.

Domestic Student Enrollment and Waiver Process

The following students are required to confirm enrollment or waive coverage for the 2024-2025 academic year by August 19, 2024 for Fall semester, January 31, 2025 for Spring semester:

  • Full-time Undergraduate Students taking 9 or more credits (residential & commuter)
  • School of Law Students (JD & MSL)

** Students who do not complete an enrollment or waiver form by the deadline will be automatically enrolled in and billed for the University Student Health Insurance Plan.

Voluntary Enrollment Option

Full-time Graduate Students taking 6 or more credits are encouraged to, but not required to enroll in the University's Student Health Insurance Plan. The deadline to complete a voluntary enrollment in the student health insurance plan is Aug. 19, 2024 for Fall semester or January 31, 2025 for Spring semester.

Waiver Requirements

If a student is currently insured under another insurance policy that is comparable to the RWU Student Health Insurance Plan and does not wish to have coverage under the University-sponsored plan, the student may waive the insurance by completing the waiver form by the deadline.

By submitting a waiver, you are certifying that you have comparable health insurance coverage and agree that you will be responsible for any medical expenses you incur, and that RWU and the Student Health Insurance Plan will not be responsible for those expenses.

Waiver Criteria

Before waiving the insurance, please review your current insurance policy to confirm it meets the following criteria:

  • Your plan must be ACA compliant, filed and approved in the U.S.

  • Your plan must provide insured benefits for doctors, hospitals, labs, pharmacies, and behavioral health providers in Rhode Island

  • Service must be accessible in Rhode Island near the Roger Williams Campus

  • If you intend on studying abroad , your plan must provide coverage anywhere in the world

The following plans do not meet the waiver requirements:

  • Plans that provide emergency-only coverage near the Roger Williams Campus.

  • Many out-of-state HMO, EPO, and Medicaid Plans do not provide comprehensive coverage in Rhode Island.

  • Plans from insurance carriers outside the U.S. and coverage by Foreign National Health Services Programs.

  • Plans marketed solely to international students are often not filed and approved in the U.S., or are not compliant with the ACA, and do not meet the insurance requirements. GBG Insurance, HDL Global Specialty, ISO, Tigerless, PGH (United), PSI, Student Medicover, and Tat AIG are examples of companies that do not meet the waiver requirements.

If your insurance plan will end before August 13, 2025, while you are in school, you must either enroll in the Student Health Insurance Plan within 31 days of your other plan’s end date or provide comparable coverage elsewhere.

The University reserves the right to decline a waiver request (and revoke an approved waiver) if it is determined that the alternate insurance plan does not provide adequate coverage.
