Book Club

Our Book Club was established in the fall of 2020 with the first book selection The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman by Ernest J. Gaines. This book was selected as it is the 2021 book selection for the “Professor John Howard Birss, Jr. Memorial Lecture Fund" and "Professor John Howard Birss, Jr. Memorial Library Fund" (established by University alumnus, Robert Blais '70). Join us for Talking in the Library Programs for Spring!
In honor of the 50th anniversary of  Ernest J. Gaines, The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman, the a keynote panel, based on Gaines’ practice and philosophy, will focus on talking about race through storytelling and music. Panelists include: writer Danzy Senna (author of Caucasia); New Orleans jazz legend Michael White; and Cheylon Woods, archivist and Head of the Gaines Center at University of Louisiana, Lafayette.Talking About Race Through Storytelling & Music (The 21st John H.
