Student Editor

Job Description

Serving as a student editor of a major academic journal will be extremely rewarding to the selected student(s). The student will see the most current and best research on the scholarship of teaching and learning in the world. By working with the faculty editors and the reviewers, students will be learning valuable skills of teamwork, critical thinking and analysis, strong communication skills, time management, and professionalism. Students will also develop into significantly stronger writers by reading and engaging with authors from around the world. Finally, students will develop new contacts that will be rewarding as the student prepares for graduate school or employment.

Year 1
Responsibility/Function

I have applied to serve as a member of the editorial team for the Journal of Political Science Education of the American Political Science Association (APSA). This is a national journal published by Taylor and Francis and serves as one of the four flagship journals of the APSA. Students will gain extensive knowledge of the field of political science, the scholarship of teaching and learning, and the editorial process of a major research journal. I am applying to have two (2) student editors for the three year FIT program.

Under close supervision of the faculty editor, the student editor(s) will perform the following tasks:

  1. Keep track of the manuscript flow in the online editorial manager
  2. Track submission of reviews
  3. Send out reminders to reviewers
  4. Manage some of the communication between reviewers, manuscript submitters, and the editorial team.
  5. Screen conference programs for papers and authors that are of potential interest for future journal submissions.

Year 2
Responsibility/Function

Under close supervision of the faculty editor, the student editor will perform the following tasks.

  1. Keep track of the manuscript flow in the online editorial manager
  2. Help identify potential reviewers from a larger pool of reviewers
  3. Track submission of reviews
  4. Send out reminders to reviewers
  5. Manage more of the communication between reviewers, manuscript submitters, and the editorial team
  6. Screen conference programs for papers and authors that are of potential interest for future journal submissions.
  7. Work with faculty editor on preliminary copy editing of manuscripts accepted for publication

Year 3
Responsibility/ Function

Under close supervision of the faculty editor, the student editor will perform the following tasks.

  1. Keep track of the manuscript flow in the online editorial manager
  2. Help identify potential reviewers from a larger pool of reviewers
  3. Track submission of reviews
  4. Send out reminders to reviewers
  5. Manage more of the communication between reviewers, manuscripts submitters, and the editorial team
  6. Screen conference programs for papers and authors that are of potential interest for future journal submissions.
  7. Work more independently on preliminary copy editing of manuscripts accepted for publication
  8. Attend conference calls with full editorial team for the journal.
