Job Description

The student will learn how to use common hobbyist and Makerspace equipment, as well as how to design and conduct safety training, certification, and grant writing. The student will interact with the entire RWU community and help in designing educational workshops for specific groups. Makerspaces are becoming increasingly common in communities, libraries, museums, and schools from the elementary to secondary levels. Equipment that used to cost hundreds of thousands of dollars are now affordable to the layperson to experiment with. The ability to do something yourself, from conception and design to completion of a product, is an essential tool for those thinking about starting their own business or doing low-cost engineering and scientific research. These skills will be valuable for a wide range of students, from engineering to education.

Year 1 ~ Responsibility/Function

Become certified to operate and maintain the Makerspace equipment (3D printers, laser cutter, vinyl cutter, sewing machine). Staff the Makerspace for several hours a week. Staffing includes opening and closing the center, assisting visitors with the equipment, conducting certification testing, enforcing safety rules, checking in/out equipment, and selling materials.

Year 2 ~ Responsibility/Function

Year 1 responsibilities continue. In addition, the student will be expected to design and run their own workshops, training community members on particular equipment or techniques.

Year 3 ~ Responsibility/Function

Years 1 and 2 responsibilities continue. In addition, the student will train new student workers in the use and running of the Makerspace and assist in grant writing for continued funding of the Makerspace. They will also work with faculty looking to conduct workshops for their classes.

*Students are prohibited from driving during work-study employment with the limited exception of authorized work-study driver positions.
