Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) are estimated to occur in one out of every 88 births. People with ASD are more likely to have 911 encounters than people in the general population. There have been a number of high profile situations where first responders have misinterpreted the behavior of people with Autism Spectrum Disorder leading to escalation of these interactions with negative outcomes such as the arrest of the individual. In order to increase awareness of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), this program has been initiated to educate first responders as to the signs and characteristics of ASD.

ALEC training helps foster a deeper understanding of ASD among public safety and law enforcement personnel. This training is available for police officers, firefighters and emergency room and courtroom personnel. Presenters are First Responders with direct knowledge of ASD through a family member. The audience hears from a colleague with personal knowledge and an extraordinary investment in the program. The goal of ALEC trainings is to complement but not replace your previous training and to provide additional tools to use in assessing the risk of a situation.

There are no costs associated with this seminar.  To register, submit the form below to Liz Campo, Administrative Assistant to the School of Justice Studies, via e-mail (ecampo@rwu.edu) or fax (401) 254-3351. Liz can be reached by phone at (401) 254-3731.
