Staff Assistant - Journalism and Graphic Design

Job Description

The Communities of Hope program, a community news service under the Journalism Program in the Department of Media + Design + Communication, is looking for a student worker with advanced graphic design skills to work on a multimedia investigative journalism project with journalism students covering the history of Bristol’s colonial and slave trade past. The student will help to create a visual identity for the project, including but not limited to developing visual elements, create style sheets for print, web and electronic (video) materials, color palettes, logos, visual elements, lower thirds, intros and outros for videos, etc. Assistant Professor of Graphic Design Nikki Juen will be advising Graphic Design student(s) through the process.

Communities of Hope is a community-driven solutions journalism news service working with specific groups of people who have been erased, marginalized, underrepresented, misrepresented and maligned by mainstream media outlets.

Our mission is to empower people in those communities through training, paid work, information gathering, and educational storytelling to participate in the public conversations about the issues that affect them, about their histories, and about their roles in society, making them a central part of the decision-making process.

The student will receive credit (bylines) and hold shared copyrights of every distributed product.

Special Skills Needed: 
Advanced design communication, web design, typography, intercultural communication, basic journalism.

Academic Major Preferred: 
Graphic design communication, Journalism (with minor or experience in graphic design), Communication (with minor or experience in graphic design), but any majors with graphic design skills and a general understanding of news media may apply.
