CD.220.92C Issues in Community Development (Online, 11/06/20 - 12/22/20)
Overview of the concepts, theories and applications in the field of community development. This is the foundation course for the Community Development program, but it is appropriate for all students interested in a comprehensive look at the elements required to understand what makes for successful communities, from housing to education, to social services and infrastructure.

CD.252.91C Roles/Issues Com Based Original (Online, 10/01/20 - 11/26/20)
This course focuses on organizational concepts and theories that are typically used in community-based organizations settings and their impact on practice with particular emphasis on the relationship between the mission, bureaucracy and programs of community development agencies.

CD.430.91C Special Topic: Society and COVID-19 (10/10/20 - 12/22/20)
This beginner-level course is designed for those who want a better understanding of infectious disease outbreaks such as COVID-19. The course aims to explore the science behind questions such as how many people have been infected, how infections are identified and measured, how infectious is the virus, and what can be done to combat it. The course will have an introduction to the history of global pandemics and to the current COVID 19. It will then discuss the biology, epidemiology and spread of the virus. The course will cover prevention and control strategies, including the populations most at risk during this pandemic and the systemic causes of these disparate impacts. The course will end by discussing how countries, organizations and individuals are coping, and look at the range of potential health and economic impacts of this pandemic that depend on global and local responses. The course will include group assignments and a final project/presentation.

CJS.210.91C Law of Evidence (Online, 10/01/20 - 11/26/20)
An analysis of common law and the rules of evidence applicable in criminal cases including presumptions and inferences, direct and circumstantial evidence, relevance, the hearsay rule and its exceptions, character evidence, and the rape shield statutes.

CJS.212.91C Police Comm Relations (Online, 11/06/20 - 12/22/20)
An analysis of the theory, procedures and practices associated with the police functions of service, maintenance of order, and crime reduction within the community. Topics include the role of the police in a changing society, police discretion, and community relations in the context of our changing culture

CJS.429.91C Criminal Law Case/Controv (Online, 10/10/20 - 12/22/20)
This course is a seminar on current topics in the criminal law. By focusing on criminal cases that are before the courts and criminal laws that are the subject of legislative activity, the course gives students an opportunity to apply their knowledge of crime to factual situations that are in the news. It also examines the extent to which criminal laws impact individual behavior and public policy. Students are expected to have a basic understanding of substantive criminal law.

EMS.303.91C Public Health Emergency Prep (Online, 11/06/20 - 12/22/20)
Prepares the student for an administrative position as a high level, or chief officer, in an EMS agency. This course will cover aspects of government structure, strategic planning, leadership, marketing, risk & human resource management, and financial management.

HCA.105.91C Intro to Public Health (Online, 10/15/20 - 12/22/20)
Introduces students who are currently practicing in health care fields to an overview of public health on a state and national level. Students will learn about the public health system, including infectious disease, chronic disease, occupational health, injury control, maternal and child health, regulation, behavioral health issues, surveillance, quality assurance, and policy.

IDS.200.31C Introduction to Interdisciplinary (Hybrid, 10/01 - 11/26)
An introduction to interdisciplinary study within Liberal Arts. Through readings in the humanities and social sciences, students will develop an understanding of various disciplinary perspectives, and understand how they work together in the increasingly complex world we live in. Course content will emphasize situations and challenges that exist in the world, and explore ideas and solutions for improving society through varying disciplines such as psychology, political science, communication, philosophy, sociology. Incorporating computer and information technology, case studies and research projects, students will be able to execute critical thinking and immediate problem solving to solve the world's big challenges.

IT.110.91C Intro Environmental Studies (Online, 10/10-12/22)
Provides the student with a foundation in environmental management practices, including the laws and regulations, best management practices for environmental leadership, and compliance. Issues include: solid and hazardous waste management, emergency preparedness, clean water, clean air, pollution prevention, energy conservation, and other applicable laws and regulations.

MUSIC.121.91C Evolution of Jazz (Online, 10/10-12/22)
Fulfills the requirement of a 5th course for both the Music Concentration and the Music Minor. Note: It does not count for the Music Major. This Course offers a study of stylistic trends in Jazz from West Africa through the swing era to the contemporary styles.

PLS.100.91C Intro Law/Legal Studies (Online, 10/10-12/22)
Introduction to the law and the American legal system. Includes an introduction to legal research, legal writing and analysis, communication skills, law office administration, and legal and professional ethics. Basic concepts of substantive and procedural law, legal terminology, the functions of the courts and the role of attorneys, paralegals and other legal professional, will be stressed.

PLS.235.91C Torts (Online, 10/10-12/22)
Study of the nature of civil wrongs and of jurisprudential concepts concerning liability. Includes the study of injuries to persons, property, and relationships; intentional wrongs; strict liability; negligence; contributory negligence; and causation, deceit, defamation, malicious prosecution, and the impact of insurance on tort liability.

PLS.260.91C Bankruptcy Law (Online, 10/10-12/22)
In-depth study of federal bankruptcy law, including corporations and individual bankruptcy. Emphasizes recent changes in the Bankruptcy Act and its practical applications. Completion of complicated bankruptcy forms is included.

PSYCH 201.91C Psychology of Learning (Online, 10/10/2020 - 12/22/2020)
PSYCH 100 Basic principles of learning are stressed in the analysis of behavior. Focus of attention is on psychology as a science. Behavioral measurement and objectivity in behavioral observation are stressed.

SCS.430.91C Special Topic: Labor Law Post Pandemic (Online, 10/10-12/22)
This course will provide a new and cutting-edge academic experience as it pertains to employment and labor law, by not only providing instruction on the overview and fundamental concepts of employment and labor law as it relates to day-to-day hiring and firing practices, but also on new and recent laws, policies, and practices governed and shaped by an ever-changing and fluid post-pandemic world by providing updates and course materials in employment and labor law, as it specifically relates to the COVID-19 pandemic and the recent federal relief legislation and state policies in social distancing in employment matters. The course is taught by the State of Rhode Island’s chief legal counsel for the Rhode Island Department of Labor and Training, the state government agency responsible for implementing and regulating Rhode Island employment and labor law matters and policies. In addition, students will be guided through the entire employer-employee relationship—from the initial decision to fill a position to the ultimate decision to terminate the employer-employee relationship. The knowledge students will gain will not be limited to an academic foundation in employment law, the course will also offer guidance about how employers can minimize their potential liability in a workplace as well as how you, as an employee, can navigate your own employment relationships.

SHS.100.91C Foundations of Soc& Hlth Svcs (Online, 10/15-12/10)
Examines the historical, philosophical, and theoretical frameworks of professional social and health services in the United States. Emphasis will be placed on the theoretical bases of developmental psychology, including structural theory, ego psychology and adaptation, object relations, and life cycle development.
