Employee Leaves of Absence

NEED TO BE OUT OF WORK?
YOU MAY BE ELIGIBLE FOR A LEAVE OF ABSENCE!

As an RWU or RWU School of Law employee, you may be eligible to take a leave of absence for certain situations. RWU complies with the federal Family Medical Leave Act and the Rhode Island Parental and Family Leave Act, which work together to provide you time off that protects your job and benefits.

Although the federal and Rhode Island leave laws provide unpaid time off, you might be paid for this time out of work through several ways:

  • Accrued sick leave time;
  • Accrued vacation time;
  • Rhode Island Temporary Disability Insurance;
  • Rhode Island Temporary Care Giver Insurance;
  • Lincoln Financial Group Short-Term Disability Insurance; or
  • Other paid time per your union contract or non-aligned policy.

Not all of the above payments may apply to you or your leave; however, upon requesting a leave, you will be given information about eligible payments available while on an approved leave of absence.

Applying for a leave of absence is easy!
Lincoln Financial Group, our short- and long-term disability insurance company, coordinates the leave of absence process.  You may apply through the Lincoln web portal, which is available 24/7 for you to file your leave.  If you choose to call to file your leave, the Call Center is open 8:00 am - 10:00 pm (Eastern Standard Time) Monday-Friday.
