He Made Us Better: RWU Remembers Dean Potter
Beloved by faculty, staff, and students, SECCM Dean Robert 'Bob' Potter leaves a legacy of excellence and dedication
Future hub of hands-on learning.
Welcome to SECCM Labs, a hub of laboratories, project rooms and open spaces dedicated to hands-on, collaborative teaching and learning. With our focus on experiential learning and cutting-edge industry trends, the School of Engineering, Computing and Construction Management (SECCM) develops students equipped with the skills and real-world experiences to meet the challenges facing the engineering and design build industries. By Spring 2020, SECCM faculty will have a state-of-the-art facility to deliver the highest quality educational experience to our students – the next generation of engineering, computing and construction management professionals. Boasting 100 percent placement into jobs or graduate school, SECCM's enrollment continues to grow, and SECCM Labs will accommodate future growth by providing a collaborative hub for applied learning.
Against the backdrop of bulldozers poised in the midst of constructing the building, Roger Williams University held a groundbreaking ceremony on Thursday, Oct. 25, for the new SECCM Labs. Also at the ceremony, the University announced it is naming the SECCM Labs building for Richard L. Bready, the former Nortek Inc. CEO and Chairman who is concluding 11 years as chair of the RWU Board of Trustees.
Located in the heart of campus, the three-story building will give students the opportunity to test designs and apply new skills in a laboratory environment. Equipped with state-of-the-art technology and tools, SECCM Labs is RWU's commitment to ensuring that our exceptional academic programs include a rigorous, cutting-edge experiential component.
During the construction phase, SECCM Labs has been a “living laboratory” for student learning. Our project partner Shawmut Construction and Design is providing behind-the-scenes access and real-time construction lessons for students, while our professors have been building hands-on lessons about SECCM Labs into courses.
As our on-campus project managers, RWU's Capital Projects will keep you informed about ongoing construction, how to navigate around the construction site, and parking restrictions. Here you will find the construction schedule, recent announcements, and information on the project development team.
Shawmut Design and Construction is the construction management firm leading the SECCM Labs project. In addition to their extensive experience in academic construction, Shawmut is one of the top employers of RWU graduates and they will be collaborating with SECCM faculty to deliver an educational program on all aspects of the project delivery.
A fundraising campaign is underway to fund SECCM Labs. Thanks to the generosity of individuals and corporations, we are more than halfway to our campaign goal. While philanthropy will play a major role in supporting the SECCM Labs project, the University plans to issue debt for the remaining balance. Learn more about why Roger Williams is making this investment in our students’ future and how you can help us meet our goal.
