Kayleigh O'Connor- M.A. Biotechnology, 2026

What made you choose to study at RWU over other schools?
I chose RWU because of the interdisciplinary approach of the Biotechnology master's program, which allows me to explore the field from multiple perspectives rather than a single track. I was also drawn to the beautiful location and its proximity to a growing biotech and research hub, providing valuable opportunities for hands-on experience and future career connections.
What campus organizations or activities outside of the classroom were you involved in? Please describe:
Outside of the classroom, I work in the Graduate Admissions Office and am a member of the RWU softball team. Working in admissions allows me to develop strong communication and organizational skills while supporting prospective students through the admissions process. Being part of the softball team helps me build teamwork, discipline, and time management skills as I balance athletics with my academic responsibilities.
Your favorite things to do around campus (if applicable):
I enjoy spending time with friends, whether it's studying or just hanging out. I also enjoy being near the waterfront, whether it's at the sailing center or walking along the water, it's a great way to relax between classes.
How did the RWU graduate admissions team help with your transition into grad life?
The RWU graduate admissions team helped make my transition into grad life much smoother. Their support, clear communication, and willingness to answer questions made a big difference in easing the transition. Having now worked in the office myself, I've seen firsthand the effort that goes into supporting students, which has made me appreciate that experience even more.
What stood out about your academic or classroom experience at RWU:
What has stood out the most about my academic experience at RWU is the interdisciplinary approach of the Biotechnology program. Being able to explore the field from multiple perspectives has given me a well-rounded understanding and helped me see how different areas of the field connect in real-world applications.
Did you complete an internship, practicum, or other field experience as part of your graduate program? Please describe:
While I haven't completed an internship yet, I am currently seeking opportunities for the summer. The program recently organized a chance to meet with multiple employers, which allowed me to learn about different roles, connect with professionals, and begin exploring how I can apply what I've learned in a real-world setting.
How as your graduate degree or certificate prepared you for success?
My graduate degree in Biotechnology is preparing me for success by giving me a strong interdisciplinary foundation and hands-on experience in research and applied projects. The program is helping me develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and technical skills that I can apply in a professional setting, while also providing opportunities to connect with industry professionals and explore potential career paths.
What advice would you give students planning to go to graduate school?
I would tell students planning to go to graduate school to embrace the challenges and opportunities that come with it. Don't be afraid to ask questions, reach out for support, or try new experiences - whether it's in the classroom, in research, or through professional connections. These experiences are where a lot of growth happens.
