BRISTOL, R.I. – Roger Williams University students are advancing sustainability and expanding access to essential goods through a new student-run thrift center in Stonewall Four, adjacent to the former commuter lounge.

The center, which opened Feb. 6, operates entirely on donations from students and staff. The initiative began after students noticed the number of usable items discarded during semester move-outs, including kitchen supplies, mirrors, and small appliances. Organizers created the space to keep those items out of landfills and make essential goods more accessible to students who may need them – free of charge.

The thrift center is organized and run by student volunteers, led by Frankie Sparrow, a junior majoring in Sustainable Studies from Portland, Maine. Sparrow notes that many of their volunteers are affiliated with the Sustainability Club, with additional support from the CEO Club and Feminist United, but emphasizes that volunteers from all walks of life are welcome.

“We hope to strengthen community, especially for those who don’t feel like they fit in elsewhere on campus,” Sparrow said.

The center accepts most gently used clothing and small household items, but cannot accommodate certain items, including used undergarments, socks, and large furniture, due to limited space.

Students interested in donating or volunteering can attend biweekly meetings at 8 p.m. in the QTRAC or email rwuthrift@g.rwu.edu. Weekly operating hours are being finalized and will be announced on the center’s Instagram at @rwuthrift.
