Lifeguard
Job Description
The Lifeguard is responsible for ensuring a safe, clean, and welcoming aquatic environment for all students, members, guests, and program participants. Lifeguards play a critical role in accident prevention, emergency response, facility operations, and customer service while supporting the mission of the Roger Williams University Aquatics Department.
Qualifications:
- Current American Red Cross Lifeguarding Certification (or nationally recognized equivalent).
- Minimum age of 16 years old.
- Current CPR/AED and First Aid certifications.
- Oxygen Administration certification (must be obtained within 60 days of hire if not current).
- Ability to remain alert, exercise sound judgment, and respond calmly in emergency situations.
- Strong communication and customer service skills.
- Ability to lift at least 50 pounds and perform all required rescue skills.
Essential Responsibilities:
Safety & Supervision
- Maintain constant surveillance of the pool, deck, and surrounding areas.
- Prevent accidents through proactive scanning and enforcement of facility policies.
- Perform swim tests and safety screenings as required.
- Respond to emergencies in accordance with department policies and certification standards.
- Complete incident and accident reports accurately and promptly.
- Maintain readiness of rescue equipment and emergency action plans.
Facility Operations
- Assist with maintaining a clean, safe, and professional aquatic facility.
- Conduct routine inspections of pool and rescue equipment and report concerns.
- Assist with setup and breakdown of recreational programs, practices, camps, and special events.
- Maintain required records, logs, and operational checklists.
Customer Service
- Provide exceptional customer service to students, members, guests, and participants.
- Build positive relationships with facility users while enforcing policies in a professional manner.
- Serve as an ambassador for the Aquatics Department and Roger Williams University.
Professional Expectations
- Attend and successfully complete all required in-service trainings.
- Arrive on time, prepared, and in uniform for all scheduled shifts.
- Work assigned shifts, including evenings and weekends as needed.
- Communicate scheduling conflicts in advance and follow department procedures for obtaining shift coverage.
