2026 Commencement Speaker & Honorary Degree Recipient

Dick Sullivan ’79
Doctor of Humane Letters, Honoris Causa
Former Executive Chairman and Chief Executive Officer,
PGA TOUR Superstore

Dick Sullivan ’79 will deliver the Commencement address to the Class of 2026 and will be awarded an honorary degree in recognition of his extraordinary career achievements, leadership, and service. Sullivan, former Executive Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of PGA TOUR Superstore, built a distinguished career spanning decades of transformative leadership in retail, sports, and marketing. Since joining PGA TOUR Superstore, he has led a dramatic nationwide expansion, quadrupling the store count and building a robust global e-commerce platform.

Sullivan, who graduated with a B.S. in Accounting from RWU in 1979, has a professional journey that includes senior leadership roles with The Home Depot, where he served as Chief Marketing Officer during a period of rapid national growth, and as Executive Vice President with the National Football League’s (NFL) Atlanta Falcons, where he helped drive record-breaking business performance. His career reflects a deep commitment to innovation, strategic growth, and organizational excellence.

“Dick Sullivan exemplifies the spirit of Roger Williams University, entrepreneurial, forward-thinking, and deeply committed to making an impact,” said RWU President Ioannis Miaoulis. “His remarkable leadership journey, from our classrooms to the highest levels of business, is an inspiration to our graduates as they prepare to lead in a rapidly changing world.”

RWU Provost Margaret Everett added, “Dick’s career demonstrates the power of adaptability, vision, and values-driven leadership. We are honored to celebrate his achievements and to have him share his insights with the Class of 2026 at such a pivotal moment in their lives.”

Throughout his career, Sullivan has been recognized for his leadership and industry impact, including being named one of Atlanta’s Most Admired CEOs. He has also contributed extensively to civic and nonprofit organizations, serving on boards and advisory groups across sports, business, and community development.

As an alumnus, Sullivan has maintained a strong connection to RWU and its mission, making his return to campus for Commencement especially meaningful. He has not only invested his time in student mentorship but has also supported Roger Williams University philanthropically by establishing the Dick Sullivan Sports Business Forum classroom in the Mario J. Gabelli School of Business. This classroom and Sullivan’s ability to bring influential speakers and sports scholars to the Sport Management Program ensure successful growth and student success for GSB’s newest academic program.

2026 School Of Law Honorary Degree Recipient

The Honorable Lara E. Montecalvo
Doctor of Laws, Honoris Causa
United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit

Judge Lara E. Montecalvo was appointed by President Joseph R. Biden, Jr., and confirmed by the U.S. Senate, to the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit in September 2022.

She is a 1996 graduate of Swarthmore College and earned her J.D., magna cum laude, from Boston College Law School in 2000.

After graduating from law school, Judge Montecalvo began her legal career as a trial attorney in the Department of Justice in Washington, D.C., where she litigated civil tax matters on behalf of the United States government. In 2004, Judge Montecalvo moved home to Rhode Island and became an attorney in the Rhode Island Public Defender’s Office. She remained in that Office, taking on a variety of roles, for the rest of her advocacy career. First, as a trial attorney, she litigated misdemeanor and felony cases in the Rhode Island state courts. Then, from 2010 to 2020, she worked as an appellate attorney, serving as Chief of the Appellate Division from 2014 to 2020. As appellate counsel, she briefed and argued appeals from criminal convictions, including over 45 reported Rhode Island Supreme Court cases. She also represented parents in civil proceedings appealing the termination of parental rights and clients in civil post-conviction appeals. Nominated by former Rhode Island Governor Gina M. Raimondo, Judge Montecalvo served as the Rhode Island Public Defender from 2020 to 2022. In that role, Judge Montecalvo led a staff of nearly 100 lawyers, social workers, investigators, interpreters, and administrative assistants. She made and executed all legal and policy decisions involving the Office, including advocating for its annual budget and assessing and proposing legislation impacting its clients and indigent defense generally.

Judge Montecalvo has been a frequent presenter at continuing legal education courses throughout her career, including annual reviews of recent case law and presentations involving fourth amendment jurisprudence, the preservation of issues for appellate review, and best practices in trial and appellate advocacy. As a judge, she has served on continuing legal education panels discussing federal appellate advocacy and brief writing.

Judge Montecalvo has long supported the creation of rigorous programs for legal interns. From 2014-2020, she managed the Appellate Division’s law student internship program, working with colleagues to design a program that offers a two-month immersive writing workshop through which students work on active appeals. Since taking the bench, Judge Montecalvo has hosted law student interns each academic term, focusing on working with interns to produce substantive legal research and writing on complex areas of federal law.

Judge Montecalvo lives in Rhode Island with her husband, attorney Craig V. Montecalvo, and their son.

Posthumous Degree Recipient

Paige Rose Moreau
Bachelor of Science in Architecture, Posthumous

Paige Rose Moreau passed away on April 26, 2025, just one year before her graduation, while participating in a study abroad program in Florence, Italy.

Paige touched the lives of many in the Roger Williams University community. She was actively involved in the campus community, making a lasting impact as an Architecture student, in her role as an RA and Head RA in the Housing Office, a cheerleader, a member of the Dance Club, and a Building Manager with Student Programs, Leadership, & Orientation. Paige was also an Architectural Intern with Bisbano + Associates, Inc. in Providence, R.I. Her leadership, mentorship, and spirit touched the lives of many. She is remembered by all as a shining light that brightened everyone’s day.

The Paige Moreau Memorial Scholarship, founded in her memory, has reached endowment level and will be awarded annually. Paige’s legacy will continue to live on through other students’ journeys at RWU.

Academic Record

This list of degree candidates is based on each student’s academic record as of February 1, 2026. A double asterisk (**) denotes students who have the distinction of completing the requirements for two majors and are candidates for the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, or Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees.

For undergraduate students participating in May commencement that have not yet had their degrees conferred, Latin Honors listed in the commencement program are calculated based on each student’s penultimate semester at the University. Latin Honors are awarded to undergraduate bachelor degree students who have met the University’s 54-credit residency requirement and have earned the minimum cumulative GPAs to be awarded Latin Honors.

Latin Honors on diplomas and transcripts will reflect each student’s final undergraduate GPA at the University. Degrees are conferred and diplomas are issued to graduates only after the University Registrar’s Office has certified that all degree requirements have been met.

Academic Regalia

The standard academic costume used today has its roots as far back as medieval times, when gowns were worn daily in European universities to identify disciplines of study and provide warmth.

In 1895, American campuses adopted the formal Academic Costume Code based on this historical precedent. The code allows the audience to determine from the costume the degree, academic discipline, and often the institution that awarded the degree.

The academic costume consists of a cap with a tassel, a gown and a hood. The tassel may be in the color of the major field of study, or in gold signifying a doctor. Graduates receiving honors wear white and blue tassels. The gowns range from unornamental for a bachelor; to longer sleeves for a master; to more ornamental, with three bands on the sleeve and front panel, for a doctor. The hood is bordered in the color of the major field of study and lined in the color of the institution which awarded the degree.

Variations from this standard may indicate academic costuming from foreign universities, or a specific expression of a group or individual.
