New Student Awards and Endowed Scholarships
As part of our comprehensive financial aid packaging, Roger Williams University offers institutionally supported merit scholarships. All applicants are considered for merit-based scholarships, with no separate application required. For the 2026-27 academic year, merit scholarships range from $18,000 to $24,000.
Merit Scholarships offered at the time of admission recognize what students have accomplished in their learning prior to enrolling at Roger Williams. To enhance the value of your investment in an RWU education, our supportive approach to financial aid includes the following:
- Merit Scholarships will renew all four years for students as long as the students remain in good standing at the university - no higher GPA requirement exists to keep their award.
- RWU students who achieve a minimum overall 3.6 GPA or higher at the end of the academic year will receive the Academic Excellence Award, providing an additional $1,000 towards the following year’s tuition. The Academic Excellence Award can be earned at the conclusion of each academic year in which a 3.6 GPA is earned.
- Exclusions: students receiving a full or near-full tuition scholarship, including but not limited to: Tuition Remission, Tuition Exchange, CIC, Harold Payson Memorial Scholarship, Bristol Memorial Grant, Michael Andrade Memorial Scholarship, Portsmouth High School Scholarship, and Intercultural Leadership Ambassador Program & Scholarship.
Beyond tuition, room, and board, we know that many other factors impact the total cost of affording college. Families from farther away must factor in the cost of flights to and from home over breaks. Therefore, to support our out-of-region enrolled students, we offer a special Travel Grant for students from states outside of the northeast U.S. This $1500 grant is awarded to all qualified students in addition to merit scholarships awarded at the time of admission. Admitted students meeting the geographic criteria will automatically qualify for this award.
- Exclusions: students receiving a full or near-full tuition scholarship, including but not limited to: Tuition Remission, Tuition Exchange, CIC, Harold Payson Memorial Scholarship, Bristol Memorial Grant, Michael Andrade Memorial Scholarship, Portsmouth High School Scholarship, and Intercultural Leadership Ambassador Program & Scholarship.

Accepted international applicants are guaranteed a scholarship valued at up to 50 percent of standard tuition, housing, and meals. This scholarship is annual and renewable. No separate application is necessary.
RWU’s President, Ioannis Miaoulis, is Greek, and we have many Greek alumni and partnerships. Because of this, RWU can be a home away from home for students from Greece. To honor this special relationship, the RWU Greek Student Scholar Award provides an additional award of up to $5000 USD for Greek citizens graduating from a secondary school in Greece, in addition to the international student scholarship that all international applicants are automatically considered for. The RWU Greek Student Scholar Award is based on a combination of financial need and accomplishments. Admitted students are considered on a case-by-case basis upon request. Students wishing to be considered should submit the financial aid appeal form found in their Applicant Portal.
Private/Outside Scholarships
There are many opportunities to earn outside scholarships. Information is often available at your local library, the counseling office at your local high school, community organizations, or numerous web-based scholarship searches. We encourage all RWU students to pursue as many outside scholarship opportunities as possible.
Outside Scholarships are funded by private entities, which have various criteria, due dates, scholarship amounts, and renewal requirements. Every semester, scholarship search programs help thousands of students pay for school by matching them to scholarships, grants, and internships. You could earn a scholarship for many reasons, including grades, athletics, volunteer work, ethnicity, personal interests, and more. Since you do not have to pay back a scholarship, it is the best type of aid to help you pay for college. Even smaller scholarships can make an impact and add up to significant support.
Be cautious when searching for scholarships. All legitimate scholarship searches should be free and should not ask you to provide any credit card or bank information. If you are unsure of the legitimacy of a scholarship offer or search, please do not hesitate to contact the Office of Financial Aid or the Better Business Bureau.
Any outside scholarship that a student receives will be applied first to any unmet financial need. In some cases, outside scholarships may necessitate an adjustment to your financial aid package. If there is no unmet financial need, we will first reduce federal work study, then loan(s), and lastly grant money.
- Apply Early and Often
- Many scholarship opportunities go unclaimed each year simply because the award didn’t receive the perfect applicant. Don’t let free money go unawarded!
- Pay attention to deadlines and details
- Deadlines are important and are used to help narrow the pool of scholarship contenders. Make sure you abide by all posted deadlines so you don’t miss out!
- Make sure if your application requires a letter of recommendation or an essay that you be sure to include this. You don’t want your application rejected simply because it’s missing required information.
- Don’t sign up for every scholarship search service – you’ll just overwhelm yourself.
- Focus on 1 or 2 search engines and narrow your choices from there. The more specific the scholarship criteria, the better chance you have of being selected as a winner!
- Outside scholarships aren’t just for incoming freshman!
- Many students are under the impression that outside scholarship opportunities are limited to new incoming students; however, many organizations and agencies offer awards to upperclassmen as well. Don’t stop looking and applying just because you’re a sophomore, junior or senior!
- Look Local First
- Make sure you check out all local opportunities around you. Businesses and agencies will often favor local students when selecting scholarship recipients since this helps them give back to the community.
- Keep your scholarship:
- Some scholarships may be renewable. However, renewable awards might have ongoing requirements, including:
- Submit a renewal application. Scholarships may require a new application each academic year.
- Grade point average. You may need to maintain a minimum GPA to remain eligible.
- Satisfactory Academic Progress. You may be required to fulfill academic requirements, such as completing a certain number of credits or courses within a set amount of time.
- Designated field of study. Will you lose the award if you change majors?
- Full-time enrollment status. Scholarships frequently require you to be a full-time student.
- Some scholarships may be renewable. However, renewable awards might have ongoing requirements, including:
