Cole Brauer
Doctor of Humane Letters, Honoris Causa
First American Woman to Race Solo Nonstop Around the World
Cole Brauer is a trailblazing sailor whose fearless spirit, record-setting achievements, and commitment to inclusion have reshaped the landscape of competitive sailing. Known for her tenacity, leadership, and deep connection to the sea, she has become a symbol of endurance and empowerment for a new generation of adventurers.
A native of Long Island, New York, Brauer discovered her passion for sailing while studying nutritional science at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. There, she joined the university’s sailing team, rising to the role of captain and igniting a lifelong pursuit of excellence on the water. While competing in collegiate sailing, Brauer was named a two-time Intercollegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) Academic All-American Team member.
After graduation, Brauer immersed herself in the sailing community of Boothbay, Maine, teaching at the Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club and gaining experience through boat deliveries along the Atlantic Coast. She earned her 100 Ton Captain’s License in 2018, a milestone that marked the start of her ascent as a professional sailor.
In June 2023, Brauer made headlines alongside co-skipper Cat Chimney by winning both legs of the 668-nautical mile Bermuda One-Two race, the first female duo to achieve this historic feat since the race’s inception.
Brauer’s most extraordinary achievement came in the 2023-24 Global Solo Challenge, one of the most extreme sports competitions in the world. After sailing nearly 30,000 miles over 130 days alone at sea, the 29-year-old made history on March 7, 2024, becoming the first American woman – and only the eighth woman ever – to race solo nonstop around the world. Aboard her Class40 yacht First Light, she finished second overall, overcoming storms, injury, and isolation while captivating a global audience who followed her journey in real time via satellite connection.
In May 2024, Brauer brought her inspiring story to Roger Williams University, delivering a lecture that offered firsthand insight into the triumphs and challenges of her solo circumnavigation. Addressing an engaged audience, she shared lessons in resilience and risk-taking that resonated with aspiring sailors and explorers alike.
Widely celebrated throughout the sailing world, her accomplishments have earned significant recognition. In 2024, she received the prestigious America and the Sea Award from the Mystic Seaport Museum and was named a finalist for U.S. Sailing’s Rolex Yachtswoman of the Year Award.
Far beyond accolades, Brauer is a passionate advocate for equity in sailing. She is committed to opening doors for women and underrepresented communities in a sport traditionally dominated by men, using her platform to make the world of offshore racing more inclusive, accessible, and inspiring for all.
2025 Honorary Degree Recipient
Joseph M. Brito, Jr. P’11
Doctor of Humane Letters, Honoris Causa
President and CEO of C.B. Utility Co., Inc., C. Brito Construction Co., Inc.,
Tupelo Realty, and Unity Park
Trustee Emeritus, Roger Williams University
Joseph M. Brito, Jr. is an entrepreneur, philanthropist, mentor, and a lifelong resident of Bristol, Rhode Island. As President and CEO of C.B. Utility Co., Inc. and C. Brito Construction Co., Inc., he represents the third generation of a family enterprise renowned for its expertise in underground utility construction and emergency response services across New England. Under his leadership, these companies have upheld a tradition of quality and reliability, solidifying their status as industry leaders.
As President and CEO of Tupelo Realty Co. and Unity Park, Brito is also a leader in the commercial real estate industry. His dedication to community revitalization is perhaps best exemplified by his transformation of Unity Park in Bristol. In 2019, he spearheaded the redevelopment of a former industrial site – once home to the National Rubber Company mill since 1865 – into a vibrant community space that now hosts blue economy manufacturing, sustainable marine industry businesses, creative workspaces, restaurants, a distillery and a brewery. This effort earned the 2023 Rhody Award for Historic Preservation from Preserve Rhode Island for its innovative approach to economic and environmental sustainability. Beyond his business ventures, he has played a key role in advancing the Blue Economy and Robotics wave, supporting cutting-edge initiatives that blend technology, sustainability, and economic development in Rhode Island.
For his professional and business leadership, Brito was recognized for his commitment to fostering innovation and creating economic growth and opportunities in Rhode Island by R.I. Governor Dan McKee at his 2025 State of the State Address.
Brito has maintained a longstanding relationship with Roger Williams University and has contributed significantly to its growth and success. As an RWU Trustee (2012 to 2022) and an RWU Construction Management Advisory Board member, he has played an instrumental role in shaping the university’s vision and impact. His commitment to student success is evident through his support for RWU scholarships, helping aspiring professionals achieve their educational goals. In 2023, RWU named Brito as a Trustee Emeritus of the Roger Williams University Board of Trustees.
Following in his father’s footsteps, Joe Brito, Jr. will join a historic legacy at RWU. His father, Joseph Brito, Sr., was honored with an Honorary Doctor of Business Administration degree from RWU in 1999. With this recognition, the Britos become only the second family to have a parent and child honored by Roger Williams University, symbolizing their enduring contributions to education, business, and community leadership.
In addition to his service as RWU Trustee, Brito has held a key leadership role in several nonprofit organizations, including as a trustee of The Miriam Hospital Foundation, a member of the Board of Governors of Bradley Hospital, and a lifetime member of the Naval War College Foundation. With his passion for mentoring students and entrepreneurs, he has positively impacted the lives of numerous students through various scholarship funds and nurtured the next generation of business leaders.
2025 Honorary Degree Recipient
Kevin M. Lynch ’94, M’04
Doctor of Humane Letters, Honoris Causa
Chief of Police, Bristol, Rhode Island
Kevin M. Lynch is the Chief of Police in Bristol, Rhode Island, and the Immediate Past President of the Rhode Island Police Chiefs Association. With over 35 years dedicated to public service, he has held various leadership roles in law enforcement and state regulatory oversight.
Lynch received a B.S. in Criminal Justice in 1994 and an M.S. in Justice Studies in 2004 from Roger Williams University, where he also completed the prestigious Leadership Rhode Island program in 2009 as part of the Epsilon II class. Since 2018, he has served as an adjunct professor at the RWU Extension School, teaching courses in police administration and leadership, community policing, criminology, ethics in criminal justice, and law and society.
Lynch began his full-time law enforcement career in 1988 with the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management Law Enforcement Division. In 1989, he transitioned to the Cranston Police Department, where he served for 21 years, retiring as the Commander, with the rank of Lt. Colonel, and Chief of Administrative Services. He then worked as the Deputy Administrator at the Rhode Island Public Utilities Commission (RIPUC) for over a decade, and in 2019, was appointed as Administrator of RIPUC by Governor Gina Raimondo.
In 2019, Lynch was appointed Chief of Police in Bristol. Under his leadership, the Bristol Police Department regained both state and national accreditation. He has implemented bias training, developed the first annual report to the community, advanced technology and school safety initiatives, and led an effort to eliminate racial and ethnic disparities in traffic stops by his police department. He also instituted a new community-based methodology of training and programs, including a youth leadership camp, senior programs, a citizens’ police academy, and a host of police-sponsored community events. He prioritizes making himself available at every community event.
Through his leadership as Police Chief and collaboration with Roger Williams University, Bristol has also been recognized as one of the Safest College Towns in the U.S., as well as consistently named the Safest City or Town in R.I., by Safewise.com.
From January 2023 to January 2025, Lynch served as President of the Rhode Island Chiefs of Police Association, taking his oath of office at Global Heritage Hall at Roger Williams University, underscoring his proud connection to his alma mater. In this role, Lynch led the implementation of the state’s first mandatory body-worn camera legislation and worked with legislative leaders to introduce a bill to reform the Rhode Island Law Enforcement Officers Bill of Rights (LEOBOR), now known as the Law Enforcement Officers’ Due Process, Accountability, and Transparency Act. This bill passed in the 2024 legislative session, representing decades of overdue reform.
In addition to receiving his degrees from RWU, Lynch has participated in numerous instructor development courses on topics such as utility regulation, emergency management, and law enforcement management, including leadership programs at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government.
2025 Honorary Degree Recipient
The Honorable Clifton B. Newman
Doctor of Laws, Honoris Causa
Judge (retired), South Carolina Circuit Court
Judge Clifton B. Newman is a distinguished jurist whose dedication to justice, integrity, and public service has shaped the legal landscape of South Carolina and earned national recognition. With a career spanning nearly five decades, he is widely respected for his calm, principled leadership both in and outside the courtroom.
Born in Kingstree, South Carolina, and raised in Greeleyville, Newman graduated valedictorian of Williamsburg County Training School in 1969. His passion for the law was sparked as a high school student, when he portrayed an attorney in a play about the landmark 1954 Supreme Court case Brown v. Board of Education, planting the seed for a career rooted in equity and fortitude.
He earned his undergraduate degree from Cleveland State University, where he served as Student Government President and became a proud member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity. While a student at Cleveland-Marshall College of Law, he continued to demonstrate his commitment to fairness as Chief Justice of the University Judiciary and as a legal advocate for low-income clients through the Legal Aid Society.
Newman began his legal career in Cleveland, co-founding the firm of Belcher & Newman. He returned to his home state of South Carolina in 1982 to open a private practice, and later formed Newman & Sabb, P.A., with offices across the state. He also served for 17 years as Assistant Solicitor for Williamsburg County, advocating for the public interest with clarity and compassion.
In 2000, after 24 years as a practicing attorney, Newman was elected by the South Carolina General Assembly to serve as a Circuit Court Judge, beginning a judicial career defined by thoughtful jurisprudence. In 2021, he was appointed by the Chief Justice of the South Carolina Supreme Court to preside over the high-profile criminal case, The State v. Richard Alexander Murdaugh, in which the defendant was sentenced to consecutive life sentences for the murder of his wife and son, an assignment that brought his leadership and steady courtroom presence into the national spotlight.
In 2023, Newman retired from full-time service on the South Carolina Circuit Court, after serving more than 23 years; however, he still occasionally serves as a judge on the court under an active/retired status. In 2024, Newman joined JAMS, a private firm that resolves business and legal disputes, as an arbitrator and mediator.
Beyond the bench, Newman has received numerous preservation awards for restoring historical buildings in South Carolina, efforts that underscore his belief in honoring the past while serving the present. His contributions reflect a deep respect for history, community, and the stories that shape us; principles that continue to resonate across generations.
