Aquaculture Research and Fieldwork Assistant
Job Description
Students will gain hands-on experience working on a marine aquaculture farm, acquiring in-depth knowledge of the marine environment through direct immersion and active participation in research projects. The facility, located on the Mount Hope Bay campus, includes the FerryCliffe 2-acre aquaculture farm, a learning platform dock, and field sites for shellfish nurseries across the state. This position focuses on productive shellfish growth, harvesting, and conducting research initiatives to advance aquaculture practices. FerryCliffe Aquaculture Farm primarily focuses on Eastern Oysters, which are the cornerstone of Rhode Island's thriving aquaculture industry. All necessary equipment is provided for this role, which is heavily outdoor-oriented. We highly encourage naturalists and outdoor enthusiasts to apply. This position involves close collaboration with Malcom Bowen, the RWU Aquaculture Field Operations Manager, and Dr. Hisham Abdelrahman, Assistant Professor of Marine Biology and RWU Aquaculture Extension Specialist.
Focus Areas
- Shellfish & Seaweeds Cultivation: Grow oysters, clams, scallops, and kelp in Mount Hope Bay, engaging in the full cycle of aquaculture.
- Comprehensive Animal Husbandry: Participate in all aspects of shellfish farming, from nurturing juvenile oyster seed in upwellers to harvesting top-quality, ready-to-eat shellfish and macroalgae.
- Growth Monitoring: Track the development of oysters as they progress from microscopic seed to market-sized organisms.
- Aquaculture Industry Exposure: Gain hands-on experience with shellfish farming techniques, technology, and gear by actively participating and learning industry strategies.
- Marine Life Expertise: Develop extensive knowledge of local marine life through daily work in and around the water.
- Business Insights: Learn about marine aquaculture and explore business opportunities in ocean farming by collaborating with local Rhode Island shellfish farmers and industry partners.
- Year-Round Fieldwork: Engage in outdoor activities year-round, both in the field and on the saltwater, offering continuous learning and experience.
We seek students who are willing to:
- Work outdoors in various conditions (hot and cold) while wearing appropriate gear.
- Perform physically demanding tasks as well as using tools under supervision.
- Learn how to use equipment properly, such as the tumbler, power washers, pumps, and boats.
- Enjoy outdoor activities and take on responsibilities related to ocean farming.
- Appreciate living organisms, ocean life, and getting their hands dirty.
- Demonstrate a strong work ethic and a willingness to learn and improve.
