Roger Williams University Officially Introduces Extension School, Expanding Access to Workforce and Professional Education
Rebrand from University College to RWU Extension School reinforces commitment to lifelong learning and industry partnerships.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – After a year-long development, Roger Williams University is proud to officially introduce the Roger Williams University Extension School (RWU EXT), formerly known as University College. This rebrand reflects RWU’s ongoing commitment to expanding access to workforce development, professional studies, and lifelong learning opportunities across Rhode Island and beyond.
The new identity reflects the evolution that the RWU Extension School has made to become the region’s leader in flexible, affordable, and industry-aligned educational offerings, empowering students of all backgrounds to advance their careers and educational goals.
“The launch of the Roger Williams University Extension School marks a significant step forward in our mission to provide high-quality, accessible education to meet the evolving needs of students and employers,” said Margaret Everett, Provost of Roger Williams University. “This rebrand reflects our university’s commitment to lifelong learning, skill development, and strengthening the workforce in Rhode Island and beyond.”
Located at RWU’s Providence campus, the Extension School serves a diverse student population, including working professionals, career changers, degree completers, first-time college students, and those seeking specialized credentials. The school provides certificate programs, associate and bachelor’s degrees, professional development opportunities, and partnerships with businesses and community organizations to align education with workforce needs.
“RWU Extension School is a launchpad for opportunity. Whether someone is looking to advance in their career, switch professions, or gain new skills, we are here to provide the education and support they need to succeed,” said Gena Bianco, Dean of RWU EXT. “Through strategic partnerships with employers and community organizations, we ensure that our programs remain relevant and responsive to industry demands.”

RWU EXT serves as Rhode Island’s premier provider of online and hybrid education, ensuring that students in critical sectors such as law enforcement, healthcare, public administration, and the trades have access to career-enhancing education. Strategic partnerships include collaborations with New England Police Chiefs Association (NEPCA), Rhode Island Fire Chiefs Association (RIFCA), NeighborWorks America, and municipal police departments across the state. Additionally, RWU EXT supports military and law enforcement professionals through its work with the Newport Naval Base.
“As both an educator and legal professional, I see firsthand how the RWU Extension School equips students with the knowledge and skills necessary to thrive in their careers,” said Judge Michael J. Feeny, Chair of the Advisory Board for Professional & Legal Studies and EXT faculty member. “With faculty members who bring real-world expertise from fields like law, public administration, and the trades, RWU EXT is preparing students for success in the industries that drive Rhode Island’s economy.”
RWU EXT is also a leader in trades education, offering programs in electrical, plumbing, and other skilled trades to meet growing industry demand. Additionally, RWU EXT’s Prison Education Program initiatives, including its NECHE-accredited teaching program at the Rhode Island Department of Corrections ACI facilities, provide vital second-chance education opportunities.
As part of this rebranding, RWU EXT is expanding outreach efforts to engage more students, employers, and community partners. The school is committed to offering innovative learning opportunities across a wide range of fields while ensuring affordability and flexibility.
