Scott Mackey has been a Professor of Finance of the Mario J. Gabelli School of Business at Roger Williams University since July of 2021, where he previously held the title of Associate Professor of Finance since July of 2011 and Assistant Professor of Finance since joining the University in July of 2006.  Dr. Mackey previously served as Associate Professor of Finance at Central Connecticut State University and also served as Visiting Professor of Finance at Clark University.  He has professional experience in alternative investments consulting with institutional clients and banks as well as with individual hedge funds.  Dr. Mackey’s skills range from analysis of alternative investment strategies such as arbitrages, hedging, and speculative investments, derivatives pricing and use, international trade flows, foreign exchange rate markets, currency hedging, and risk management strategies for multinational corporations to past service on the Board of Directors for the Northeast Business and Economics Association (NBEA).  Dr. Mackey has also been a research associate of the Center for International Securities and Derivatives Markets (CISDM) at the University of Massachusetts and has served on the editorial review board for the Journal of Business and Economic Studies.  Dr. Mackey has regularly served as peer reviewer for national and international conferences.

Dr. Mackey’s teaching interests focus on a broad range of topics in Finance including Derivatives, International Finance, and Financial Management as well as alternative investment strategies.  His courses focus on ‘learning how to learn’ in a ‘hands-on’ classroom environment where daily practice is encouraged.  Dr. Mackey’s research interests are in the field of alternative investments which includes hedge funds, Commodity Trading Advisors (CTAs), and Managed Futures funds.  His research has been published in journals such as the Journal of Alternative Investments and the Journal of Wealth Management, among others.  He is also a regular presenter at national research conferences.

Dr. Mackey earned his doctorate in Finance at the Isenberg School of Management at the University of Massachusetts, where his dissertation focused on risk premiums of individual hedge funds using a unique, proprietary database of hedge funds.  He was a recipient of the Charles Edward Via, Jr. fellowship for his master’s degree at the School of Engineering of Virginia Tech and earned his bachelor’s degree in engineering, cum laude, from the George Washington University.  Dr. Mackey has worked in international engineering offices in Washington, D.C. and Boston and is also a past registered Professional Engineer.
