Women's Center

The Roger Williams University Women’s center, located adjacent to the 9, 10, 11 Tower of Maple Hall, serves as a support and resource area for all students. Members of the Women’s Center meet weekly to engage in feminist discussion, explore current issues facing women and to develop awareness programs and other educational opportunities for the Roger Williams campus community. This group also serves as a support network.

Women’s Center sponsored programs include: Annual “V-Day” Events, including student benefit productions of Rivka Solomon’s “That Takes Ovaries” and Eve Ensler’s “The Vagina Monologues”; raising money to end violence against women and girls; “The Independent Woman Workshop Series”; an annual Take Back the Night March; participation in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk; “Bears for Tears”; the Annual RWU Outstanding Women on Campus Campaign; coordination of the state-wide Clothesline Project; and most recently the “Walk A Mile In Her Shoes” men’s initiative to end violence against women.

The Women’s Center is also responsible for bringing high quality performances and educational opportunities to campus such as “Equalogy” interactive educational theater; hosting the “Empowering the Young Women of Rhode Island Conference” featuring Rosalind Wiseman, author of Queen Bees and Wannabees, the book the hit movie Mean Girls was based on; and co-sponsoring speakers like Mike Domitzr and his “May I Kiss You” Program.

Silent Witness Initiative

In March of 2002, the RWU Women’s Center created a chapter of the Rhode Island Silent Witness Initiative (SWI), honoring the lives of women, men and children murdered in acts of domestic violence. In May of 2011, the RWU Women’s Center helped a local high school create the first high school chapter of the project in the country. The RWU chapter of SWI is one of the most active in the country.

ALL students are invited to join the Women’s Center. Contact the Women’s Center at x3294, Jen Stanley at x3123, or Mary Randazzo at x3161 for more information.
