Confidentiality

For Students

All visits to Health Services and medical records pertaining to any aspect of your health care are strictly confidential. Only those directly involved in your care will have access to your record. Medical information will not be discussed with anyone without your prior consent.  Parents, faculty, and other University staff do not have access to your medication information.

The few limited exceptions when confidentiality will be broken is: (1) when such an action is necessary to protect you or someone else from imminent danger; (2) when a record is subpoenaed by a court of law; or (3) when reporting certain communicable diseases to the Rhode Island Department of Health is required by law.

For Parents/Families

When will you be called...
We will contact you any time your son or daughter requests that we do so, and always in the event of a life-threatening emergency. In general, we encourage students to communicate with their parents about anything, other than a minor illness that needs medical attention. This allows you to share in decision making, particularly if a referral is necessary.

If you want to call us...
Health Services is bound by laws governing confidentiality which affects all individuals eighteen years of age or older. This need not be a barrier to expressing your concerns and our offering our reassurance. If you become concerned about the health or well being of your son or daughter, please do not hesitate to call. If it is urgent and Health Services is closed, contact Public Safety.
