Habitat Restoration Assistant - Save the Bay

Job Description

Are you interested in putting your science and ecology education to work doing hands-on ecological restoration? Save The Bay Habitat Interns gain experience in conducting restoration, field monitoring, and planning associated with the restoration of Narragansett Bay habitats. Interns will gain an understanding of applied ecological restoration techniques, field monitoring protocols, and environmental problem-solving techniques.

Location: Work will occur outdoors, at salt marsh restoration sites primarily in southern Rhode Island. Some remote office work such as data entry will be included.

This position is offered for the Fall 2021 semester.

What you will learn:

  • Field work associated with salt marsh restoration, such as digging and planting.
  • Specific field activities may include: pore-water salinity and water table depth monitoring at on-going marsh restoration sites, vegetation monitoring, and fish monitoring
  • Rapid assessment protocol to see how rapid sea level rise is affecting Rhode Island salt marshes
  • Data entry and data analysis of marsh restoration monitoring data

What we require:

  • Must be available weekday mornings for at least 15 hours/week.
  • Must have a vehicle and be able to travel to work sites.
  • College students, recent graduates, graduate students or beginning professionals working towards or having obtained a BA/BS or higher degree in biology, education, marine studies, or related field
  • Enrollment at an accredited college or university as a junior or above during the term of your internship
  • Computer experience (MS Office)
  • Positive attitude and ability to do physical, outdoor work in a team environment
  • Strong communication skills, writing, and field skills preferred.
  • Must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and able to show proof of vaccination
