Construction Management Certificate

This 10-week program is designed for professionals in the construction field looking to effectively manage projects of all sizes. Although experience is beneficial, it is not a requirement for successful completion of the offering. With weekly modules focused on planning, estimating, scheduling, procurement, contracts, and much more, this certificate provides you with the skills needed to efficiently manage people, materials, and equipment. Whether you work at a small firm or a big company, this Certificate in Construction Management can help you take the next step in your career.

This program is designed to meet the needs of professionals working in roles across the industry who are interested in moving into management roles.


This program is fully online, with a weekly virtual class on Tuesday's from 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm and online assignments.

Course Requirements

Students should have a computer and be familiar with utilizing the software in the MS Office Suite.

A Minimum passing grade of 70% for each module is required to receive the Certificate.

Class Meeting Structure

The Certificate in Construction Management is set up in 15 modules delivered over the course of 10 weeks. The modules will consist of online class meetings, interactive assignments, and assessments. Each module will take approximately 7.5 hours to complete.


Planning and Scheduling

Basic concepts of planning and scheduling construction projects are discussed to include various schedule types and relationship between time and money. Use of scheduling software will be demonstrated with practical applications


Estimating, Bidding, and Award

Quantity takeoffs, creating estimates and budgets, competitive bidding, and how projects are awarded are discussed. Use of estimating software will also be demonstrated with practical applications


Project Safety and Health

Various safety procedures, PPE, OSHA requirements/certifications, and site-specific safety and health plans


Quality Control

Quality control and quality assurances processes will be covered. Punchlist, re-work, and deficiency resolution will also be discussed.


Materials and Methods

Studies in construction building materials, methods, and components. Emphasizes analysis of material with respect to design, specifications, construction methods, testing, and inspection.


Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing Systems

A basic study of the primary mechanical, plumbing, and electrical equipment and systems used in buildings. Design principles for selecting and sizing various systems are discussed.


Basic Structural Systems and Temporary Work

Different types of structural designs and building loads will be discussed as well as the role and scope of temporary work


Plans, Specifications, and Contract Documents

The fundamental study of all construction documents to include: drawings, specifications and building codes. The student will examine the relationship among drawings, specifications and codes and how to use the included design information to manage a project.


Project Controls, Accounting, and Billing Procedures, Getting Paid

An examination of the activities involved in the effective management of single and multiple construction projects. The module includes the study control processes, the collection of actual production data, the computation of project performance, and the determination of appropriate corrective action


Procurement, Buying Out the Job, and Closeout

The study of procurement processes, how to buy out the job (hire subcontractors and order materials), and how to effectively closeout a project


Building Information Modeling (BIM), New Technologies, and Construction Software

A study on how BIM is used in the design and construction of a project, investigation and use of construction specific technologies and software are also discussed


Role of the Owner, Architect, and Engineers

Discussion of the role the Owner, architect, and engineers play in the development of a construction project


Sustainable Construction and Green Building

Concepts of sustainable design and construction, green building processes, green materials selection procedures


Soils and Foundations

Soil properties, testing, types of foundations and loads are discussed


Site Layout and Logistics

Site preparation, layout, mobilization, and logistics are discussed, as well as development of a site mobilization plan

image of Dr. Michael EmmerDr. Michael Emmer received his B.S. in Construction Management, Suma Cum Laude, from Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston in 2002, his M.S. in Construction Science and Management from Clemson University in South Carolina in 2004 and his Ph.D. from the University of Florida’s College of Design, Construction, and Planning in Gainesville in 2009. His areas of research and interest are sustainable construction with a focus in material extraction/reuse and deconstruction, estimating, and is also active in promoting and exploring owner training and productivity in the AEC industry. He has been teaching full-time for over ten years and before that worked in the construction industry for over 25 years in a variety of positions to include laborer, carpenter, carpenter foreman, superintendent, project manager, and owner’s representative.
Dr. Emmer is a member of the American Council for Construction Education (ACCE) as a trustee, the American Society of Home Inspectors (ASHI), United States Green Building Council (USGBC), City of Attleboro Planning Board & Historical Commission, Association for the Advancement of Cost Engineering (AACE), and Housing Works of Rhode Island (HWRI) board of directors.
