Roger Williams University Spring 2020 Semester COVID-19 Pass/No Pass Policy

To the RWU Community:

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the entire Roger Williams University community has mobilized to ensure that student learning and student success remain our top priority even as we adapt and take extraordinary measures to protect our individual and collective health and safety.

While the transition to online teaching and learning is a shared experience, we know that the COVID-19 crisis and disruption to in-person, campus learning will affect each student differently and in ways we cannot fully predict or understand. In order to mitigate the impact of the crisis on student academic success and personal well-being, Effective immediately all RWU students (except RWU School of Law which has its own policy) will be allowed to convert their Spring 2020 courses to a Pass/No Pass (P/NP) grading system. Students will have until June 1, 2020 to elect the P/NP option for any of their undergraduate courses for this term only. Look for details on the application procedures to select this grading option to be posted online on the Registrar website in the weeks ahead.

A few of the selected guidelines developed are as follows:

·         There will be no limit on the number of Spring 2020 courses that a student can have recorded as Pass/No Pass.
·         Catalog restrictions on the Pass/No Pass option for courses counting toward major(s), minor(s), or the Core Curriculum will be waived.
·         Students have until June 1, 2020 to convert any course grade to Pass/No Pass.
·         Pass/No Pass courses will not count be calculated in the student’s GPA and any Spring 2020 course with No Pass grade will not earn any course credit.
·         Students should consult with their deans and academic advisors before electing this option to determine the impact of P/NP grades related to their major(s), medical and graduate school admissions standards, or other program and degree requirements.

In the years to come, Spring 2020 will always stand out in our memory as well as in the history of higher education as a time of generosity and care.  This policy change is just one example of the student-centered approach that defines the RWU academic community and ethos. I am grateful to our faculty and administrative colleagues for acting so swiftly to consider and implement this policy revision during these times, with student success and well-being at the forefront of our thinking.

Thank you.
