This course will present the fundamental principles of the Cognitive Interview (CI), an innovative method to enhance the recollection of respondents in an investigative interview (e.g., criminal or accident investigation). The CI makes use of principles of cognitive psychology and communication, and small group dynamics. The instructor has conducted CI training with a variety of investigative agencies, including the FBI, U.S. military, NASA, NTSB, and overseas. Specific interviewing techniques that will be taught include: witness-compatible questioning, guided imagery, code-compatible output, controlling the flow of information, focused concentration, establishing rapport, strategic use of open-ended and closed questions, context reinstatement, note-taking, varied retrieval, interacting with reluctant witnesses, model statements, and detecting deception. These techniques will be demonstrated in live interviews and tape recordings from field interviews.

The instructor, Dr. Ronald Fisher is currently a Professor of Psychology at Florida International University.  Ron co-developed the Cognitive Interview technique (with Ed Geiselman) to enhance witness recall. His current research also examines alternative methods to detect deception and interpreting inconsistent witness testimony.
