Cyber Crime: Supporting Victims & Protecting Yourself

An Advanced Training Academy conducted by Family Service of Rhode Island and hosted by the Roger Williams University Justice System Training & Research Institute

This course will serve to enhance the capacity of a broad range of professionals, including victim advocates, mental health and social workers, and others to address the needs of child and adult victims of various forms of cyber crime.  Attendees will also learn strategies for protecting themselves and their families.  The training is presented by local and national experts on law enforcement, cyber security, victim advocacy, and child and adult trauma. Light breakfast and lunch provided.

Morning session:

Comprehensive overview of cyber crime, including what constitutes a cyber crime, the various methods used by perpetrators, what information is public, and resources to protect oneself and one’s children.  

Afternoon Break Outs:  Choose between Cyber Crime Against Children(e.g., cyber bullying, sexual exploitation, child pornography, etc.) OR Cyber Crime Against Adults(e.g., fraud, identity theft, revenge porn, sextortion, etc.).  Within each break out, attendees will learn about Rhode Island & federal laws, jurisdictional challenges, statistics, recent investigations, predator MOs, victim rights, legal outcomes/remediation, trauma effects, practical strategies for supporting victims and their families, and resources for victims and professionals.

Closing Panel Discussion:

Focused on local and national initiatives and partnerships working to address cyber crime, including the Rhode Island Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force and the Cybercrime Support Network/2-1-1 by 2021 Initiative.
