Internships and Externships

CM Internships

Construction management internships are a way for students to make the connection from the academic setting to real world experience in the building industry. Students are advised to participate in at least two relevant internships while at RWU. Faculty from the program work diligently in helping students find an internship that is a good fit for them. In many cases students end up taking a full time job with the company they interned with.

Today, most institutions of higher learning are extolling the virtues of “Experiential Learning”.  Roger Williams University is among them.  The Construction Management (CM) Program has led the way at RWU for many years in encouraging our students to seek and to experience paid summer internships as a perfect way to;

1) Audition the company(ies) and industry that will be the student’s life upon graduation

2) Allow the company(ies) to audition the student before hiring upon graduation.

The faculty of the CM Program believe that spending three months in the summer working with professionals in the industry at all levels, from the “trades” to “management”, bring into sharp focus the skills and knowledge that are taught during the academic year.  We encourage and support every student to engage in three (3) paid internships to supplement their academic endeavors.  The experience is invaluable!

CM Externships

Construction Management (CM) Winter Externship Program

Roger Williams University continually strives to create experiential learning opportunities for our students. Center for Career and Professional Development's Winter Externship Program is just one more avenue to connect our students to career professionals out in the field. Through the Externship Program, students have the opportunity to shadow a professional for one day during the first three weeks in January during the winter break. In the field, externs engage in meetings, presentations, brainstorming sessions, site visits and any other activity that may demonstrate an actual work day.

This program helps students with the following:

  1. Educates them about various career paths in the construction and the building industry
  2. Helps them gain a better understanding of their field, career or the construction industry in general
  3. Helps them transition from college to work
  4. Builds their professional network
  5. Provides an understanding of employment trends, salaries and career ladders within the construction industry
  6. Introduces them to the variety of departments that make up a construction company
  7. Helps non-CM majors with choosing a minor in construction management

This program will help employers with the following:

  1. Build a stronger partnership with the University and the Construction Management program
  2. Increase corporate visibility on-campus
  3. Bring candidates who are better prepared for a professional work environment
  4. Shape the future of their organizations and the construction industry
