Voter Registration

Voter Registration and Information

Nobody will ever deprive the American people of the right to vote except the American people themselves and the only way they could do this is by not voting.   Franklin D. Roosevelt

Whether you are a first timer or a seasoned veteran of the voting booth, you may have questions about voter registration like:

Should I register to vote in Rhode Island?

How do I get an absentee ballot?

Do I have to reregister if I’ve changed addresses?

Can I register online?

Voter registration policies vary from state to state (and sometimes county to county!)  Therefore, it’s impossible for us to put all of the voter registration guidelines in the country on one page.  But we can direct you to the best sources for your answers.

FAQs regarding students in University housing who want to register to vote in Rhode Island:

Q:  How should I fill in the “home address” line?

A: You must register to vote with your actual street address.

  • If you live on the main Bristol campus, put “1 Old Ferry Road”, Bristol, RI  02809.
  • If you live at Almeida, put #201 Bayview Avenue, Bristol, RI  02809.
  • If you live at Baypoint, put #144 Anthony Road, Portsmouth, RI 02871
  • If you live off campus, put your complete off-campus address.

Q: How do I fill in the Mailing Address line?

A: If you have an RWU mailbox, put your usual mailing address.  If you receive mail at another location, like an off-campus apartment, you must put that address.  Your residency will be verified by the town clerk by mailing you a confirmation card.  If the card is “returned to sender”, this will nullify your registration.

Q: Where will I vote if I register in RI?

A: Students living on the main campus will vote on campus.

Students living at Baypoint will vote in Portsmouth and will be advised of their polling place by mail from the Portsmouth Town Clerk’s Office.

Students living at Almeida or other addresses will be advised of their polling place by mail from the  Bristol Town Clerk’s Office.

Q: Will registering to vote in RI affect my financial aid award.

A: It might.  That is why we strongly encourage you to speak to a representative in Financial  Aid or contact your parents so you can make an informed decision!
