Hidden Truths: Stories of Race and Place Lecture Series
"The Neighborhood News Bureau's 150 Years of St. Petersburg's Black History Project"
Tuesday, September 20, 2022
7:00pm via Zoom

The Local Black History Project is a program Bernardo H. Motta, Assistant Professor of Journalism developed while director of the University of South Florida, St. Petersburg Neighborhood News Bureau (2015-2020), in partnership with the African American Heritage Association, the Dr. Carter G. Woodson African American Museum, and local Black-owned newspaper The Weekly Challenger. The project unearthed and curated historical documents, texts, artifacts, and materials dating from the arrival of the first Black settlers to the area where St. Petersburg, Florida, is located today. The effort also recorded oral histories, produced and co-produced historical documentaries, developed digital maps and timelines, developed curricula for local schools, integrated Black history into the main curriculum in multiple local programs, and made the entire database freely available to the public.

The Co-Lab @ RWU is pleased to present Roger Williams University's third annual Hidden Truths: Stories of Race and Place lecture series. This series features the research and policy work of RWU faculty and staff that resurfaces untold histories and complicates received knowledge and understandings of our collective pasts. The series engages the campus community and the public in deeper understandings and informed dialogues around how past inequities continue to impact societal and cultural realities and disparities today.

All lectures will take place virtually and will be available for later viewing, making the presentations modular and accessible to work into courses. To view past presentations in the series, visit RWU’s YouTube channel.
