Summer Sailing Institute
Rhode Island is celebrated for its seaside attractions and robust sailing. The Summer Sailing Institute is designed for high-performance sailors (ages 16-18) who are interested in perfecting their racing technique under the instruction of Olympic-level sailors Emma and Carmen Cowles. This two-week overnight program features weekly racing clinics and weekend excursions to local areas of interest.
The Summer Sailing Institute is designed to improve the technical abilities of student sailors as they prepare for local, national, and international competitions. Students will refine their technical skills allowing them to perform better at local, regional, and national regattas. With a training schedule running Monday-Friday, weekends will involve off-campus excursions to places of interest around New England. The institute runs from July 10-23.
With a curriculum focusing on boat-handling and speed improvement, students should expect to participate in fast-paced drills similar in intensity to those seen on the competition circuit. Following each day on the water, sailors and coaches will return to the Richard L. Bready Sailing Center to debrief and analyze video footage captured earlier in the day. After the debriefs wrap up, sailors will get a glimpse into the life of a college student; enjoying meals in the dining hall, spending time in common rooms, and using many of the indoor and outdoor facilities that RWU has to offer. This is a summer program that your student sailor won't soon forget!
