Janet Baldwin joined the SECCM faculty in the fall of 1998, after completing her Ph.D. at The Pennsylvania State University in Environmental Engineering. She received her M.S. degree from The Pennsylvania State University and her B.S. from Tufts University, both in civil Engineering. She is a registered Professional Engineer in the State of Maine.
Dr. Baldwin’s dissertation work focused on maximizing efficiency of coagulation processes in drinking water treatment. The work required development of a computer model to simulate the interaction between micro- and nano-particles, including bacteria and other pathogens, in order to identify the impact of various characteristics on the formation of easy to settle solids. Results from the computer model were compared to data from lab work as well as actual water treatment plants.
At the School of Engineering, Dr. Baldwin has been active in the field of water supplies and treatment. She has sought out opportunities to help communities in developing countries establish sustainable water supplies as well as provide safe drinking water. To do this work, she has traveled to remote areas of Brazil and The Dominican Republic. She has involved a number of students in this work, affording them the opportunity to apply their knowledge to real-life problems.
Dr. Baldwin is also active in her profession. She currently serves on the Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Board of Licensure for the State of Rhode Island. In addition, she is active in the Society of Women Engineers and Engineers Without Borders. Her efforts in outreach have led to over two thousand elementary school-aged girls learning about engineering and getting to know female engineering college students.
At Roger Williams, she teaches ENGR 210 – Engineering Statics, ENGR 300L – Mechanics of Materials Lab, ENGR 320 – Environmental Engineering, ENGR 415 – Water and Wastewater Treatment, and ENGR 405 – Air Pollution and Control. In addition, she currently serves as the Engineering Program Coordinator.
