Second Year Design Studio

Through combinations of short exercises and comprehensive projects, students are encouraged to develop a conceptual trajectory for their work, with an emphasis on site, climate and the environment, rural and urban contexts, functional programming, basic structural systems, building materials and thermal envelopes. Fundamental design principles are employed as students evaluate and consider more complex design parameters in the development appropriate architectural responses. Special attention is paid to an understanding of human scale, accessibility, equity, empathy and cultural contexts as conditions that impact upon design. Design communication skills and principles are further enhanced through computational media, digital representation and simulation as well as fundamental CAD/CAM/CNC fabrication techniques throughout the sequence.
