Nancy Nicholson has appeared as piano soloist in New England and in the Midwest. A specialist in French music, she was twice a featured performer at the prestigious French Piano Institute in Paris. She was pianist and co-artistic director of the Jamestown, RI Chamber Music Series, and performed on concerts throughout New England as part of the trio “Music for a While.”
Her interest in the organ music of J.S. Bach led her to formal organ study and the position of music director at Church of the Ascension in Cranston, RI. She has presented workshops for the RI Chapter of the American Guild of Organists and at regional AGO conventions.
As a teacher, she conducted choral activities and taught music education while serving as a Peace Corps Volunteer at Notre Dame University in the Phillipines. She has served on the faculties of the Cape Cod Conservatory and Cape Cod Community College. Currently, she operates her own music studio in Providence.
About her passion for teaching, she says, “I encourage students to become complete musicians: learn how to read music, develop piano technique, explore the great classical piano literature, be able to comp chords from lead sheets, and understand music theory as applied to the keyboard. Every one of us has something to express through music. I ask students to strive for mastery of their instrument so they can freely express music’s deep emotional meanings.”
