Message to Parents About Student Injury and Sickness Insurance.

Health care and health insurance is often a concern of parents as their sons and daughters depart for college.   We at Roger Williams University are actively involved in the health and well being of our students.

All University day students are charged a Health Service Fee. The Student Health Fee covers the cost of care received at RWU Health Service with the exceptions of charges incurred for  routine physical exams, immunizations, lab work and prescription medication.

Health Service  is open 8:30am to 5:00pm, Monday thru Friday.  After hours, emergency care is provided through Newport Hospital or Bristol County Medical Center.  Transportation to and from both facilities is provided at no cost to the student.

Additionally all students living in University housing and all international students are required to have the Student Injury and Sickness Insurance Plan.  This is also available upon request to all full time day students who pay the Health Service fee.  We at the University have found this to be an important benefit to students and parents.  With the proliferation of HMO's, and the limits imposed on out of network benefits enforced by many health insurance plans, the Student Injury and Sickness Insurance plan often fills a gap in coverage.  In addition, it helps to ensure timely and appropriate care for your son or daughter while at school.

Claims for care provided at an off-campus facility must be submitted to Student Resources  at the address listed on the last page of the brochure. The policy, which can be used in conjunction with other health insurance, begins August 14 and is in effect for a full year. Coverage is in effect whether the student is at school, at home or traveling.

After reading through this website, or at any time you have a question about coverage under this policy, please feel free to call the claims administrator for Student Resources.

How the Student Injury and Sickness Insurance can benefit your son or daughter ?

Please note this policy is secondary to your private insurance and will be used as an excess coverage policy.  Your son or daughter must have a copy of your private insurance card and know the limitations of their policy.

Specifically, it is important to know if prior approval is needed or if there are limits out of network, etc. It is their responsibility to present this information when seeking medical care off campus to avoid unexpected charges and optimize coordination of benefits between the two policies.

  1. The Student Injury and Sickness Insurance Plan will be used for any charges incurred while receiving care at RWU Health Service, up to the limit of the policy. This includes lab, x-ray and pharmacy charges.  The insurance is billed directly.

  2. This insurance can be applied to cover any co-pays from your private insurance.

  3. If we need to transport a student to a hospital the ambulance charge will be paid.

  4. Students may be referred to the Newport Hospital and Bristol County Medical Center for care. Both these facilities will accept the Student Accident Insurance without prior approval, up to the limits of the policy.   Some   private insurances fall short if the person is seeking care out of network or after hours and prior approval is needed.

  5. Coverage is 12 months.  New policy year begins August 14.  The student does not have to be in school to use the insurance.

  6. The RWU intercollegiate sports teams are covered by their private insurance first, and the athletics insurance second.  The Student Injury and Sickness Ins. does not cover sports team related injuries.  It will cover an injury that is sports related as long as the student did not sustain the injury while playing for the team. For example if a student fractures an ankle while playing touch football with friends on campus, the Student Ins. will pay.
