Services

The Center for Counseling and Student Development is a university-based department which is responsible for providing comprehensive psychological services to full-time undergraduate students at Roger Williams University. Services offered include: individual, couple, and group psychotherapy, crisis intervention, consultation, psychoeducational programming, and clinical assessments.

In addition, the Center provides consultation and referral services to part-time students, faculty, staff, and administrators. The Center also coordinates the P.E.E.R. Program (Peer Educators with Expertise in Referrals) which consists of approximately ten students who are trained by the counseling staff to conduct psychoeducational workshops in the residences on campus.

Clients of the Center are typically between the ages of 18 and 25, and present with problems ranging from preexisting psychiatric conditions to developmental issues related to separation and individuation.

The staff consists of a licensed clinical nurse specialist, a licensed social worker, and two licensed psychologists. Their orientations and interests are quite varied with an inclination toward developmental and psychodynamic perspectives. A consulting psychiatrist meets with the staff for case conference on a weekly basis.

The intern may expect at least two hours of individual supervision per week within the 16-35 hour placement. Training will be provided in individual, couple, and group psychotherapy. Despite the growing trend toward brief-focused treatment, an awareness and sensitivity toward transference and counter transference issues will be an integral part of the supervision.

The student will be offered an opportunity to be a co-leader of a therapy group, or develop a group of their own interest. Experience in conducting psychoeducational workshops will be provided as well as a leadership position in the coordination of the P.E.E.R Program.

The application process consists of a letter of interest, a resume, two reference letters, and an interview with our staff. There is a $7,000.00 stipend and a $500.00 professional development fund (books, conferences, material, etc.) attached to the position. Students interested in the program should contact Jim Azar, Ph.D., Director, Counseling Center, 1 Old Ferry Road, Bristol RI 02809 or call him at (401) 254-3124.
