Student Affairs Task Forces, Spring 2005

Throughout the Spring 2005 semester the Division of Student Affairs created three task forces to discuss and review three main topics influencing our campus climate.

Topics included were the level of respect and civility within our campus community, alcohol and other drug policies and outcomes, and our alcohol response and prevention initiatives. Task Force committees comprised of students, administrators, and staff, who met bi-weekly from January through May. Student members were nominated by community members and represented different areas of the University.

Each task force surveyed focus groups of faculty, staff and students representing all four years. Thorough assessments were structured to benchmark our University policies, practices and resources with other similar campuses in order to propose positive recommendations to effect change in our community. In May each task force submitted a formal proposal of recommendations, examples of new initiatives and long-term goals to achieve a stronger sense of community.

The Office of Judicial Affairs and Community Standards staff served on the Alcohol and Other Drug Task Force, which was chaired by Heidi Hartzell, Director of Judicial Affairs and Community Standards and John King, Vice President of Student Affairs.

With students, faculty and staff, the committee completed a federally mandated bi-annual review of our alcohol and other drug policies and conducted focus groups in residence areas, amongst student leaders, and administrators. This task force recommended some minor changes to existing policy and sanctions effective Fall 2005. They are as follows:

2nd Violation

Residence Hall Probation, Wellness referral OR Educational sanction, $100.00 fine, Parental notification

Quantity Policy

No common source, kegs, beer balls, punch bowls, etc, and all hard alcohol containers over 1 liter are prohibited. Quantity limit per room for those of age is 30 beers and 1 liter of wine or hard alcohol. Not to exceed 60 beers and 2 liters per apartment regardless of occupancy number. Violations of the quantity policy, regardless of age, will result in enhanced sanctions.

Drugs

1st violation

Temporary Removal and Ban from Campus Housing, University Probation, Wellness referral, Parental notification, $100.00 fine.

2nd violation

Distribution of Drugs

The distribution or selling of drugs will not be tolerated on our campus and will result in a minimum of University suspension for one year to a maximum of University expulsion. Students are not eligible for refund of tuition, room, or board.

While the University understands that only a minority of our student population violate the alcohol and other drug policies and regulations, it is important that all students be familiar with the policies and associates sanctions imposed for those students found responsible.
