Commonly Used Words & Abbreviations

CBP - United States Customs and Border Patrol  The branch of DHS controlling the borders and, at airports, doing inspection.

Change of Status – The process by which a non-immigrant may request that USCIS change the visa status within the United States.

DHS – Department of Homeland Security.  Oversees USCIS, ICE and CBP.

DOS – Department of State.  Handles entry visas and travel information.

D/S – Duration of status, the annotation on F and J I-94 cards.  Means that you are eligible to stay as long as your status allows and you maintain that status.

DS-2019 – The document for Exchange Visitors (J visa holders)

Exchange Visitor – The official term for one who holds J-1 visa status in the United States.  Can be a professor, researcher or other scholar.

F-1 – Student visa category

IC – Intercultural Center. Located at the end of Maple Hall.

ICE – Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement.  Responsible for enforcing immigration law.

Immigrant – A person who intends to immigrate to the United States.  Green card holders, permanent residents and resident aliens are synonymous terms for immigrants.

I-20 – Certificate of eligibility for F-1 student status.

I-94 – Arrival/Departure record handed out on airplanes to all non-immigrants and stapled into passports at the port of entry.

J-1 – Exchange Visitors visa status category.

NIV – Non-immigrant visas.  People using these visas intend to return to their home countries.

Non-immigrant – One who can prove that their purpose in the United States is temporary.

POE – Port of entry into the United States

SEVIS – Student and Exchange Visitor Information System.  An online government database that tracks international student and exchange visitor records.
