This one-day, basic course designed for tribal, local, and state law enforcement supervisors will begin with a discussion of supervising police personnel from ethical, legal and operational perspectives. The class will then examine the paradox created in supervision, by examining the historical and practical differences between management and leadership. From this beginning, the class will then examine some of the common characteristics of leaders who have risen through the ranks. The leadership role that every officer plays in their community and their agencies will be discussed. Specific issues facing law enforcement supervisors, such as: vicarious liability, adopted omission, training, and diversity in the workforce will be explored. The course will conclude with an introduction and overview of the Situational Leadership model.
