Recycling & Sustainability
Recyclemania Events
What?

Recyclemania is a friendly recycling competition among 200 universities. All material recycled during this period will be used to determine an average weekly weight of recyclables per student, staff and faculty member. The school that recycles the most wins! The main goal of this event is to increase student awareness of campus recycling and waste minimization.

Roger Williams is in the Per Capita Classic category, in which our school’s recyclables are calculated by:

Amount recycled = weight of recyclables/population figures

Population figures:

  • Residential students = number of students x 1
  • Full-time staff and non-residential students (commuting students) = number of individuals x 0.75
  • Part-time staff and part-time students = number of individuals x 0.5
When?

The competition runs for 10 weeks, starting January 27 and ending on April 5.

How?

All campus community members are encouraged to participate in Recyclemania. All you have to do is  recycle! The Recycling and Sustainability Committee is putting out more 96-gallon blue toters around campus to provide additional recycling accessibility.

Materials that are considered recyclable include:

  • Paper: boxboard, catalogs, hard and softbound books, junk mail, magazines, newspapers, office paper (all colors), phone books.
  • Containers: #1 and #2 plastic (soda, water, juice, beer, laundry detergent bottles and many shampoo, conditioner and body wash containers), aluminum cans, glass, steel cans.
  • Cardboard: baled and unbaled cardboard boxes.
Recyclemania Events
  1. Recycled Percussion kick-off band: Friday, February 8, at 8 p.m.
Come join the Recycling and Sustainability Committee students, campus, faculty, staff and the community for remarkable hard-rock drumming, led by the world’s fastest extreme drummer, Justin Spencer, and intoxicating hip-hop funk grooves spun by turntable artist DJ Pharoah. Performing on everything from their signature trash kits—including plastic buckets, huge ladders, mortar casings and giant 50-gallon containers—the band will keep the audience on its feet. The new band line-up for the MAN vs. MACHINE 2007-08 tour consists of two power percussionists—Justin Spencer and Ryan Vezina—the hip-hop funk of DJ Pharoah and the take-no-prisoners Guitar Monster Jimmy.

Visit the band’s website at www.recycledpercussion.com.

  2. Fashion Show: Recycled Scene
This April, the Recycling and Sustainability Committee is teaming up with the Multicultural Student Union to put on a piece in their fashion show featuring  student designs of clothing using recycled or recyclable materials. All students are encouraged to enter their designs and audition to get their clothes in the fashion show! Please enter designs before March 31.

  3. The 10 Spot
There will be fun activities and information during a to-be-scheduled 10 Spot, which will take place on a Monday night from 8 to 10 p.m. Keep your eye out for it.

  4. Tabling and Information
Be alert for the Recycling and Sustainability Committee students to table in the Commons periodically to help support informing campus of the committee’s goals. The committee is here for any questions, complaints or suggestions. Please let us know!
