Roger Williams Students to Present on Performance of Student Investment Fund
BRISTOL, R.I., April 2008 – Managing your own investment portfolio can be challenging—but managing $100,000 in university assets can be quite daunting. But for a group of undergraduate business majors at Roger Williams University, they have confronted this challenge with ease by participating in the University’s Student Investment Management Fund.

The student investment team—made up of 11 Gabelli School of Business students—will deliver a presentation about the fund’s spring 2008 semester performance at Roger Williams on Thursday, May 8.

The students manage the Student Investment Management Fund under the supervision of Professor Michael Melton, director of the University’s Center for Advanced Financial Education. Compared with other undergraduate programs, the Roger Williams fund is unique in that students do not inherit an existing portfolio—they construct one from scratch each semester, gaining experience in the entire process of portfolio management.

To make instantaneous trading decisions, the students utilize the Center for Advanced Financial Education, a high-tech facility modeled after those in private wealth management firms that provides access to real-time data and news.

In 2006, a previous team’s investment portfolio outperformed top business schools across the continent and earned them a third-place finish at the Global Student Investment Forum in April 2007. The team placed in the undergraduate equity growth category with a 17.21 percent return over the previous year.

This semester’s presentation will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. in the Marine and Natural Sciences building, room 200, on the University’s Bristol campus at One Old Ferry Road. The event is free and open to the public; to RSVP, e-mail Vincie Bertolino at vbertolino@rwu.edu or call (401) 254-3046.
