Pop Songs from the President & Words of Wisdom from the Speaker-Commencement 2008

BRISTOL, R.I., May 19, 2008 – For 953 graduates, Roger Williams University President Roy J. Nirschel’s hidden pop singer talent and Jackie Joyner-Kersee’s advice on the value of service made for a memorable Commencement ceremony at the University on Saturday, May 17.

After the graduates marched into the Commencement tent behind the sound of bagpipes played by the Rhode Island Professional Firefighters Pipes & Drums, President Nirschel stole the show. He donned sunglasses and extended his Commencement tradition of singing a current pop song—this year’s choice was English pop singer Natasha Bedingfield’s hit song, “Unwritten,” which is also the theme song to MTV’s “The Hills.”

The audience roared with laughter and cheers, but the song’s lyrics offered a poignant message to the graduates: “Live your life with arms wide open… today is where your book begins… the rest is still unwritten.”

In his address, President Nirschel acknowledged the many accomplishments and endeavors of the Class of 2008 and noted the significant transformation of the University during the students’ time on campus. He concluded by imploring students to take the advice of late rocker Warren Zevon: “Make sure to enjoy every sandwich.”

As keynote Commencement speaker, Olympic gold-medalist and famed track star Jackie Joyner-Kersee stressed the values of service, self and education to the crowd of more than 5,000.

“Know your value,” she urged. “Don’t compromise your self, soul or spirit.”

Ms. Joyner-Kersee—who has dedicated much of her life to giving back to East St. Louis, Ill., the community that helped shape her success—pushed graduates to serve their communities and their alma mater.

“Tell the world what Roger Williams University has to offer,” Ms. Joyner-Kersee said.

Earlier in the ceremony, student speaker Erin Elizabeth McAvoy discussed her life as an RWU undergrad, which included studying abroad in London, pulling all-nighters and having dance parties in the middle of the day.

“All of those experiences helped me figure out who I am and why I am here,” said Ms. McAvoy, who earned a B.A. in theater. “Did you ever ask yourself who you are and why you are here? I truly believe we are all here for a reason, just as everything happens for a reason.”

After the ceremony concluded, graduates and families spent the day at the University, enjoying campus-wide celebrations for each of the University’s schools and colleges.
