Roger Williams University – like other colleges and universities across the nation – experienced an unusual fall influenza outbreak during the fall semester. We are happy to report that the incidence of H1N1 influenza began to decline by the end of the semester, as it did elsewhere nationally.
A second wave of influenza is anticipated during the winter months, however. The second wave may be a combination of H1N1 and regular seasonal influenza. For this reason, it is very important for those who have not yet been vaccinated against H1N1 or seasonal flu do so. The vaccine for both types of flu is now readily available, and we encourage everyone to seek out the vaccine through your primary care provider or through the University clinics detailed below. Vaccination remains the most effective way to fight H1N1 flu and prevent another wave of illness this spring.
STUDENTS interested in receiving either vaccine can attend either of the following Heath Services clinics in the Lower Commons:
- Monday, February 8 from 3:00 to 5:30 p.m.
- Thursday, February 18 from 3:00 to 5:30 p.m.
The H1N1 flu vaccine is free of charge; seasonal flu vaccine will be available for $20. For additional information, contact Health Services at x3156.
FACULTY AND STAFF ONLY may pre-register to attend an H1N1 flu clinic Thursday, February 11 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Gymnasium on the 2nd floor of the Recreation Center. Additionally, limited amount of SEASONAL vaccines will be available upon request when you arrive for your pre-scheduled H1N1 vaccine appointment.
For complete details on how RWU employees can pre-register for the H1N1 vaccine.
Please note: If you are unable to attend this RWU employee flu clinic, you can find information about community flu clinics.
We wish you all a happy and healthy semester. Remember to protect yourselves by covering your cough and washing your hands. Get adequate rest, nutrition and exercise to keep your resistance up.
