2009 Shape Up RI Registration has begun!
Make Your New Year’s Resolution Come True!
Happy New Year! I am proud to announce the start of registration for the 4th Annual Shape Up RI team wellness challenge.
We urge you to join us as we take charge of our health in 2009. Over the past three years, we have proven that teamwork and friendly competition are a powerful prescription for a healthy lifestyle. This year let’s commit to healthy eating and active living.
In 2008, you showed how we can work together to achieve amazing results. More than 12,000 of you participated, walking 2.6 million miles and losing an average of 7.5 pounds each. This year our goal is to reach 20,000 participants and attain equally astounding outcomes.
How it works
Participants compete on teams of 5-11 people to see who can lose the greatest percentage of collective team weight, log the most hours of exercise, and/or walk the highest number of pedometer steps over a twelve week period.
Every member is receives a pedometer, logbook, reminder wrist band, and weekly motivational newsletters. Participants can also attend over 250 events held across Rhode Island including yoga, rock climbing, fitness classes, nutrition lectures, and many more.
Teams make their own schedules and plans for how they will succeed in pursuing a healthy lifestyle. Every year, teams join sports leagues or local gyms, develop daily exercise regimens, and devise ways to fit physical activity into their day. Participants can wear pedometers to track their walking, take healthy cooking classes, participate in walkathons, sign up for dancing lessons, attend nutrition seminars, and much more.
During the 12-week competition, team members will log into our online TeamTracker system to report their progress bi-weekly. At the end of each round, team standings will be published online. Winning teams will be honored in May.
