Valentine’s Day

One of America’s most popular holidays is Valentine’s Day, which is celebrated on February 14. Also celebrated in Europe, it is the holiday of romance and love – especially for couples. This holiday got its name from the early Christian martyr Saint Valentine, and in the Middle Ages became associated with love when the notion of “courtly love” was popular. These days people often will exchange gifts such as flowers, chocolate, candy, small stuffed animals and, of course, a Valentine (a card expressing your feelings for your loved one).

The colors red, white and pink are affiliated with Valentine’s Day, and you are likely to see students wearing these colors around campus in honor of the holiday. And although it is a holiday commonly reserved for couples, it is increasingly popular for single friends to spend the day together too, either watching movies, going out to dinner together in a big group or just hanging out.

Every Valentine’s Day, the RWU Dining Commons hosts a contest for students to win a special Valentine’s Dinner. Specially prepared by the chefs at RWU, it is a fancy three-course meal that is served in our private dining room.  The dining room is set up with multiple small, round dining tables for two people, covered with white table cloths, heart-shaped confetti and small candles. It creates a very romantic feeling in our everyday cafeteria.

Happy Valentines Day!

Around the World: Campus Dining

At whatever University you choose to attend, eating will inevitably be part of your college experience. Not only are food and dining a way to share one’s culture, but they’re also a way to experience cultures from around the world. Familiar foods can help you feel connected to your home country while you are studying in the U.S., and dining is a great way to meet new friends. Eating healthy food can also help you fuel up for those big exams!

At Roger Williams University, we host an array of different ethnic foods in our world-class dining facilities. Our chefs are always concocting new recipes for our students, and they welcome your additions should you decide to attend RWU. So come and add to the global experience at RWU by sharing your country’s cuisine with our community!
