March for Hunger - RWU Food Stamp Challenge
A recent USDA report on food insecurity shows that hunger in Rhode Island has grown from affecting 1 out of 10 households in 1998 to affecting 1 out of 8 households today. Each month there are more than 50,000 Rhode Islanders seeking food assistance through the Food Bank's network of 285 member agencies. 43% of pantry recipients choose between paying for food and paying for utilities. Additionally, 32% choose between food and medicine or medical care.
The Feinstein Center, funded by a grant from the RI Campus Compact, is facilitating a Food Stamp Challenge. We are seeking 4-6 participants to participate in a food stamp simulation program for ten days, from March 22 through March 31. Participants will be asked to purchase food in accordance with RI SNAP guidelines, and only with funds provided by the program. The participants will blog about their experiences and sit on a panel, all as part of the Feinstein Center’s March for Hunger program. If you are interested in participating or would like more information, please contact KC Ferrara at kferrara@rwu.edu by March 8th. To see how others have experienced similar programs, visit http://foodstampchallenge.typepad.com/.
March for Hunger Banquet
Tuesday, March 23, 2010 7:00 – 8:30 PM, Baypoint Dining Hall
"Few experiences bring to life the inequalities in our world more powerfully than an Oxfam America Hunger Banquet event. Unique and memorable, the Oxfam America Hunger Banquet event allows organizers and participants alike to experience firsthand how our decisions affect others in the world.”
Guests who attend will draw a ticket upon entering the dining hall. This ticket will place each guest within a specific ‘income level’ that therefore corresponds to the meal they will be receiving that evening. For more information on this event you can visit the Oxfam website at Oxfamamerica.org, visit the RWU Hunger Banquet Facebook event page or contact the Feinstein Center at service@rwu.edu. Tickets to this event will be $3 and can be purchased in the Upper Commons or at the Feinstein Service Learning Center. Few guest leave the hunger banquet with a full stomach, but all participants leave with a greater understand of the problems of hunger and poverty. Take the first step in fighting poverty!
