Tuesday May 6th, 2008 was our First Annual 5th Grade Day at RWU!  All the 5th graders from the Bristol and Warren Regional school district spent the day on our campus. The RWU Student Senate and WQRI sponsored the event with support from Student Programs and Leadership and the Feinstein Center for Service Learning and Community Engagement.

The 5th graders arrived on campus early in the morning on buses and entered the Campus Recreation Center. President Nirschel addressed them along with their chaperones and teachers. The weather was beautiful as the kids toured the campus, led by RWU tour guides. The rest of the day included a session on teamwork and leadership run by our student senate, an athletic session with activities and dancing, a preselected session on majors, a session on our clubs and organizations, and a closing speech by Lynn Fawthrop, the Vice President of Enrollment Management. Fawthrop spoke about what colleges look for and also asked trivia questions from the Are you Smarter Than a 5th Grader? card deck. We also had a poster with the event name on it that all the 5th graders signed. This poster will be hung up in their middle school next year.

The day was very successful and we hope that this becomes an annual tradition that our students, faculty, staff, and the K-5 schools can look forward to. Thank you to everyone who made this event possible!
