Chief Karen Krasicky, Plympton (CT) Police Department, Keynote speaker focused on her experiences rising through the ranks of the Brideport (CT) Police Department and eventually becoming the Chief in Plympton.  She related to the audience that it takes strength, determination, and the ability to be true to yourself in order to have a successful career in law enforcement, whether you stay in patrol or choose to attain rank.

Awards Presentations

Dean Stephanie Manzi, Ph.D., Roger Williams University School of Justice Studies, introduces the Irene C. Monahan Historical Leadership Award winner.

The 2008 Irene C. Monahan Award winner, Detective Sergeant Ingrid Jonas, Vermont State Police.  "Sergeant Jonas is a female officer who has "paid her dues" and is respected by her peers as a State Trooper with an expertise in criminal investigations especially child abuse.  She is a role model for all persons in the Criminal Justice system and fostered the success of women in law enforcement," is part of what her nominator had to say.

Officer Joanne Alboum, Middletown (RI) Police Department, introduces the Excellence in Performance Award winner.

Captain Janet Champlin, Portsmouth (NH) Police Department, enthusiastically accepts the Excellence in Performance Award.  In part, her nominator says, "I can state without reservation that she is not only the finest female police officer I have known, but perhaps truly one of the finest law enforcement officers I have ever worked with in my more than 28 years."

The Women in Law Enforcement Conference Planning Committee is recognized.  From left to right, they are Officer Joanne Alboum, Middletown (RI) Police Department; Captain Christine Crocker, Cumberland (RI) Police Department; Professor Carol Facella, Salem State College; Lieutenant Kerry Holsten (ret.), Warwick (RI) Police Department; Deputy Chief Cathleen Moniz, Fall River (MA) Police Department; and Lieutenant Robin Winslow, Coventry (RI) Police Department.  Not pictured:  Dr. Agnes Doody, Professor Emeritus, University of Rhode Island; Captain Linda Eastman (ret.), Warwick (RI) Police Department; Lieutenant Mary Day, Providence (RI) Police Department; Professor Roslyn Muraskin, Long Island University; and Dr. Yolanda Scott, School of Justice Studies, Roger Williams University.

Captain Christine Crocker, Cumberland RI Police Department, co-presenter in the morning session on Domestic Violence by Police Officers, takes part in the afternoon discussions.

Detective Jackie Hooper, Cumberland (RI) Police Department, shared her espertise in a morning session on Crimes on the Internet.  She is pictured here actively engaged in the afternoon facilitated discussion.

(l-r) Deputy Chief Cathleen Moniz and Professor Emeritus Agnes Doody. Ph.D., designed a survey that was distributed in the morning to get participants to start to consider generational issues.  The results of that survey are at 2008 Women in Law Enforcement Survey Report.  They facilitated the afternoon session on "Seeking understanding, creating strategies for building strength through understanding."
