6th Annual Women in Law Enforcement Conference 2007

"The Future of Policing and the Role Women will Play"

Ellen Scrivner, Ph.D., keynote speaker, earned her reputation as an expert on community policing and as a leader in developing innovative solutions to complex police problems.  She served on the command staffs of two major urban police departments, has studied police use of excessive force as a VisIting Fellow at the National Institute of Justice. 

Dr. Scrivner served as Assistant Director of the Training & Technical Assistance at the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS Office), U.S. Department of Justice, and launched the nationwide network of innovative Regional Community Policing Institutes.  Subsequently appointed as Deputy Director of COPS, and then with the Office of Law Enforcement Coordination of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), she consulted with federal law enforcement and major law enforcement groups, and is a published author, putting her in a unique position to discuss the future of policing and the role that she believes women will play.

SRO Jackie Hooper, Cumberland (RI) Police Department, discusses "My Space" and other Internet activities that participants should be aware of as police officers and parents. 

United States Secret Service Special Agent Caroline O'Brien presentation included information on investigating and protecting against Identity Theft, a growing problem for law enforcement throughout the country.

Officer Michele G. (Alaire) Rudolph, Providence (RI) Police Department, researched the history of women in her department.  The inaugural award presented is named in honor Irene C. Monahan, who was the first woman police officer in Providence and the state of Rhode Island.

The highlight of the afternoon was a highly interactive roundtable discussion on "Groundbreaking for Women in Public Safety," by (from left to right) Deputy Chief Cathleen Moniz of the Fall River (MA) Police Department, Deputy Superintendent Marie Donahue of the Boston (MA) Police Department, Captain Christine Crocker of the Cumberland (RI) Police Department moderated by Dr. Ellen Scrivner.  Participants actively engaged in questions and the discussion.
