Command Training Series:
Mid-Management Course

In class:

Michael Schirling, M.S., a Lieutenant with the Burlington, Vermont Police Department delivered the learning module addressing Data Analysis, Planning & Project Management.



The course curriculum, which developed critical thinking skills while providing practical application strategies, included modules on Leadership & Management Principles for the Law Enforcement Mid-Manager, Emotional Intelligence, Organizational Culture & Change Management, Organizational & Interpersonal Communications, Data Analysis, Planning & Project Management, Budgeting, Labor Law, and Problem Employees & Conflict Management. In preparation for class lectures and discussions, students completed assigned textbook readings during the two-week program.
Group Presentations:


As a means of bridging the gap between the conceptual and the practical, students completed group projects that addressed contemporary middle manager issues in policing. The projects were designed so that the course content was applied.
Chiefs Roundtable:

Gary Dias, Executive High Sheriff for the State of Rhode Island and Past President of the New England Association of Chiefs of Police, served as moderator for the Chiefs' Roundtable.

Class Spokesperson:

Lieutenant Eugean Heiney of the Old Saybrook Police Department (CT), selected as the class spokesperson, addresses his classmates, Institute staff and guests during the closing ceremony. During his speech, Lieutenant Heiney recognized Chief John D. Coyle (ret.) Executive Director of the New England Association of Chiefs of Police, and applauded the Association for their foresight in forming a partnership with Roger Williams University to deliver the Command Training Series: Mid-Management Course.
