October 23-November 3, 2006

"The Officer Michael Briggs Memorial Class"
Mid-Management Course attendees dedicated the two-week course (October 23 - November 3, 2006) to Officer Michael Briggs, Manchester Police Department (NH) who died in the line of duty on October 17, 2006. The class consisting of police managers from throughout New England, acknowledged Officer Briggs' ultimate sacrifice in service to his community.

The Officer Michael Briggs Memorial Class

During the course, class discussions addressed subject matter such as Emotional Intelligence, Leadership & Management Principles, Time Management, Organizational Culture, Change Management, and Contemporary Critical Issues. Members of the class worked on group projects utilizing course content to address "real world" Issues.

Team 1

Team 1 completed a project they titled "Operation Clean Sweep." This focused on drug problems in a targeted community.

Team 2

Team 2 designed a Traffic Safety Program that addressed planning, implementation, and evaluation with the goal of reducing motor vehicle crashes.

Team 3

The project completed by Team 3 focused on formalizing the field training and evaluation program within a police agency where it had not previously existed.

Development of a field training and evaluation program for first line supervisors served as the topic for the project undertaken by Team 4.

Harry Watson, Adjunct Professor of Criminal Justice at Roger Williams University, conducts daily textbook reading review with the class in preparation for facilitated discussion with diverse instructors.

Assistant Dean Robert McKenna, Director of the Institute, introduces Roger Williams University's Associate Professor of Criminal Justice Dr. Yolanda Scott who facilitated the New England Association of Chiefs of Police Roundtable.

Roundtable participants: Chief Peter Carnes, Yarmouth (MA) Police Department; Chief Betsy Hard, Bloomfield (CT) Police Department; and Chief Peter Brousseau, West Warwick (RI) Police Department; answer questions on such diverse topics as computer crimes, physical fitness, expectation of mid-manager's performance measures, and immigration issues.

Sergeant Joseph Coffey, Warwick (RI) Police Department who  was chosen by his peers to be class speaker, formally announced the dedication of the two-week course to Officer Michael Briggs and reflected upon the learning that took place in the classroom
