For Students
Internal Transfer Information

The Gabelli School of Business has a selective internal transfer admission policy. We welcome applications from any student interested in majoring in Accounting, Computer Information Systems, Finance, International Business, Management, or Marketing.

However, because of enrollment limits, we cannot accept every student who applies.  To maximize your application, please read the following carefully and adhere to all deadlines and requirements.

What are the requirements for transferring to the School of Business?

First, you must have completed at least 15 credit hours at Roger Williams University by the end of the current semester.

Second, you must be in good academic standing.

Third, you must have taken or be currently taking the following 4 courses:

  • One MATH course from the following list
  • MATH 120/121 QBA I or equivalent
  • MATH 122 QBA II or MATH 124 Statistics
  • BUSN 100 Enterprise or ECON 101 Principles of Macroeconomics or ECON 102 Principles of Microeconomics
  • CIS 101 Intro to Spreadsheets  or CIS 102 Computer Applications in Business
  • WTNG 102  Expository Writing

You must have earned a grade of C in each of these classes.

How Do I apply?

An application form is available from the Deans Office in the School of Business or on the School’s website http://gsb.rwu.edu (look for Forms under Info for Students).   Fill out the form completely and submit it to the Dean’s Office.

When Do I Need to Apply By?

The application deadline for Fall semester admission is the previous April 1; the Spring semester application deadline is November 1.

Who makes the transfer decision?
A School Faculty Committee reviews each application for evidence of strong, consistent academic performance.

When Will I Be Notified?

Although application deadlines take place during the semester, the Committee waits for semester grades to be posted before making admission decisions. Academic performance during the application semester is an important factor in the admissions decision. Applicants  will be notified about Fall semester admission after July 10 and about Spring semester admission after January 1.

If I meet the requirements, am I guaranteed admission?

Students who have completed the above admission requirements, but have GPA's below 3.0, display erratic academic performance, downward grade trends, or weak business course grades, will be considered for admission, but are at significant risk for being denied admission. Because of enrollment limits, the School of Business may not be able to admit all internal transfer applicants who meet the stated requirements.  The School, therefore, reserves the right to refuse admission to any applicant.

If my transfer application is not accepted, can I apply again?

Some students who have been denied admission after their first application, but otherwise show promise, will be invited to reapply for admission. Others should seek alternate degree plans.

Those invited to reapply, who intend to major in Accounting,  Finance, International Business, Management, or Marketing,  must have successfully completed (or are in the process of completing) all of the following courses with a minimum grade of C:

  • MATH 120/121 QBA I or equivalent

  • Mathematics requirement of CIS major  MATH 121/122 or MATH 135/137 or MATH 213/214)

If I haven’t heard about my application, how do I register for next semester’s classes?  And what should I register for?

You should see your current advisor for advising and course selection.  When the School of Business receives your application, we will notify your current advisor of your intention.  Our notification will also include a list of School of Business courses that you may register for as a non-School of Business student.

What if I’m Accepted and I’m registered for the “wrong” classes?

The School of Business Deans Office will work with you to change your schedule so that you are registered for classes normally taken by a School of Business major.

Can classes taken in the summer count for a Fall application?

Students applying for Fall admission during the Spring semester may take admission courses during a Summer session, as long as the course is completed and grades are posted by July 10. Students doing so should note where and when such courses are being taken in the COMMENT section of their application. Students taking summer admission courses outside of Roger Williams University can only use courses which end in time for a grade report to be sent to the School of Business before July 10. Grades for those courses must be FAXED to the Gabelli School by July 10th in order for those grades to count in the admission process. Instructions for having Summer admission course grades FAXED can be picked up in the Deans Office.

Can I take business courses if I’m not a School of Business student?

Any Roger Williams student is free to take any 100 or 200 level class offered by the School of Business.  Students who have declared a minor in business area may take any class required of that minor.  Students who are not business majors may take no more than 9 School of Business classes.   This limitation is consistent with the School’s accreditation standards.
